Dhalia dilemma. Orange Nugget ??!!

The tuber was sealed in its packet so I can't assume it got muddled up. It's label stated Dhalia Orange Nugget. So it is only just about to flower but in the mean time it's foliage has grown enormous. It's main stem is more like a trunk, although still green, it is the girth of a fat cucumber. It ha engulfed all other small plants which were Atleast half a metre away from where we planted the tuber. Also I had trouble with wasps chomping some leaf stems until the leaf broke off from the stem. Does anyone have any ideas because orange nugget is meant to be fairly compact isn't it ?? I will upload a picture in Little while so you can see.

I've seen it described as a 'patio dahlia' but I've also seen it described as growing up to 30" tall , which when in a pot makes it well over a metre tall!

Presumably for the larger patio?  image

I got a mis-labelled dahlia this year. Flowers the size of dinner plates. Moved it off the patio and way up the garden. It seems much more in perspective from the house now!

I remember buying a load of tubers that were reduced a couple of years ago, planted some last year and they've popped up this year. I'm not an experienced gardener so didn't know I was supposed to lift the tubers during the winter months.. luckily they've flowered! I've had this Dhalia pop up in my garden but have no idea what it is; would be grateful if anyone can identify it (its approx 6in wide)

  • BevG that is a gorgeous flower, sorry I cant help you identify.

Hiya Hostofan1, unfortunately my monster Dhalia is a completely sterile plant. I'm not sure how to get another plant from it, would it be via a leaf cutting?

also the packet said it was deer proof, lol turns out it is also a slug repellent. which was unfortunate for my neighbouring Dhalia, 'Red Pygmy', which got absoloutely decimated by the slimy sods.

How do you like this one, we were really pleased with it.

  • Ah lovely Frannerz and Bev! B3 didn't happen to get them from the 'what' shop? Mine's supposedly an orange nugget, turned out a yellow cactus, 3 "bedding"  were put in a large pot but now looks ridiculous as one is up to my hip and something ballerina is pure white, pretty though!
