I too am not a great fan of roses.Tried them in my garden and they always seem to have something wrong with them (blacspot, greenfly, mildew etc.) so they were always more trouble than they were worth with spraying etc!

I don't dislike roses as a flower but I will NOT grow them in my garden!!!

    Healthy, harmless debate, Hosta.

Verdun for a man who ? hates roses, there are plenty to see at Dixter. He did hate Rose beds, but on that I am sure we will all [ well most of us ] agree.

How can you lie there and think of England

  • I have a rose bed....

It's got shrub roses and ground cover roses that intermingle - so that you don't see much soil.

I've got a pergola with roses. ( here when we bought the house ) and I've planted about 6 since moved in.

I'd have to say they're not the stars of the garden, but I'm kinda fond of them

Used to hate roses till I moved to a garden with heavy clay soil. Where other plants have failed or need molly coddle planting I find roses thrive in quite adverse conditions e.g. winter water logging.

Invicta. we moved here 4 years ago and are on deep clay. Previous garden was pure builders' sand . ( 12 " of the stuff)

I've not found a single plant which struggles on clay.

    Devon.
  • I'm on clay too. Maybe that's the love-hate divide.

i was a slave to the hosepipe in my last garden: not so here.To be fair, I've moved from Hants to Devon.

I've inherited too many (about 25) so they annoy me and there are things I'd rather do than fuss with them so most are a mess. I only really like 3 or 4 of them.

I had one with an intact label, The pilgrim, which was clambering up a 5' x 5' trellis and not surprisingly the whole lot collapsed.  Disentangled the mess and chopped the rose to the ground and it's now, in about 6 weeks, 5' tall and covered in buds.  They're pigs to dig out though.

I think you have to find one that appeals to you in colour, scent and proliference (is that a word?)

I like Arthur Bell, Anne Boleyn, Moyesii Geranium and Rugosa.

It also the flower I have my earliest memory of and takes me back to my nan's house in summer.
