  • Whether you like it or not cats are defined at law as being allowed to free roam.   The animal welfare act very clearly places responsibilities on owners and that includes the requirement to afford the opportunity to exhibit normal behaviour patterns which means going out and doing what cats do.

Charlie November.   It's a shame you're not able to read for comprehension in context and are selectively relying on a snippet of stuff taken entirely out of context.   IF you were to read the full reports you'd get a different story.

Even IF you were to read the summary from the RSPB you get an entirely different picture.

    RSPB  "No evidence"

Despite the large numbers of birds killed, there is no scientific evidence that predation by cats in gardens is having any impact on bird populations UK-wide. This may be surprising, but many millions of birds die naturally every year, mainly through starvation, disease, or other forms of predation. There is evidence that cats tend to take weak or sickly birds.

It is likely that most of the birds killed by cats would have died anyway from other causes before the next breeding season

Prime reason for reduction is such as certain species of birds and mammals is loss of habitat.

That includes a load of people who want gardens covered in paving slabs and patio decking and fenced so it's impervious and so ridiculously neat and tidy that nothing could take cover and live there.

NB Toxiplasmosis is endemic and it's actually in soil and that's where the parasites eggs are.   IF a deer or cow or sheep does get it then it's because the parasite has been ingested from soil and when people get it it's ordinarily from eating contaminated meat and even because they've accidentally ingesting contaminated soil (e.g., not washing hands after gardening or eating unwashed fruits or vegetables from a garden)

Estimates suggest that the majority of people infected by toxiplasmosis have it from eating meat.      Generally it's symptom less and estimates suggest that 60 million people in the United States may be infected with the Toxoplasma parasite. Of those who are infected, very few have symptoms because a healthy person's immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness.

My cat would be hard pressed to kill all those rodents as she has no teeth. Maybe she could sit on them image

Anyway third world problems mate if this is all we have to moan about - our kids are not getting blown up in Syria or starving to death or getting trafficked. You haven't lost your home and become homeless and you have enough to eat.

I refuse to get upset by trivia such as this because I think I am very lucky to have a job and a roof over my head and a lovely garden. I'd sooner try and get on with my neighbours however annoying they are because the alternative is having to live here with a bad atmosphere in the air everytime we meet outside.

Lou, or suck em to death? Might take a while....

Well said Northernlass... the problem is that folk can always take figures out of context.

And other figure for Charlie and scroggin to take on board is that pesticides kill about double the amount of birds each year than cats. Should we go around killing farmers then, using their logic? image  At least a cat is a dumb animal.. what's the so-called evolved human's excuse? Without a doubt, humans kill more birds through chemicals, loss of habitat, believe it or not, even having windows on buildings (tons of feathered lives are lost each year on that alone), and general nasty rubbish that humans inflict on wildlife.

But I guess that's too much to take on for the average cat hater.

I think I'm going to start counting how long it is before the next "I Hate Cats" thread starts.

Seems to be about every 10 days / 2 weeks at the moment ...

Folks - there are over 1,000 threads on this forum on this subject   http://www.gardenersworld.com/search/forum/cats/  - the majority of them contain much anger and unpleasantness  - it's certainly a subject that arouses strong emotions.  Thre are some things in this world about which we will never agree.

    Scroggin..

Not sure I agree with letting the cats roam meaning you don't care. I took on a 5 year old troubled, stressed and vicious cat who was kept as a house cat. It spent 5 years trying to get out the house with it's previous owner. The day I let it out and the cat turned around 100% overnight. It's calm, quiet, content now it's allowed outside. So am I supposed to quosh it's nature, cause it distress just because folk like you think I don't care? Feels like a sweeping and judging statement. Not all cats take to a lead, not all cats will stay indoors. I would prefer both, just so folk can't harm my cat, or it get killed by a car, but I can't make him live my ideals to his own detriment.. He deserves a quality of life too.

Dove, wise words, thanks. I guess I got a bit irked when Charlie November posts about killing pets in German. That's more than a difference in opinion to me, that's violence against another living creature, just because it doesn't suit his lifestyle. Nice person.
