  • Its our first season with veg.  We moved last autumn and inherited a F&V garden that needed a lot of tlc.  We've already made mistakes.  How many of you have seen young or plug plants at the garden centre and thought you'd better get them in quick? After all they wouldn't be on sale if it wasn't time would they? Learn't that one the hard way setting beans for the third time!! Still, the good news is that the other night we had young broad beans, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce (iceberg), cucumber, and potatoes in a salad all from the garden/greenhouse with our pesto chicken Brill!  Also, already made gooseberry tarts and jam and blackcurrant pies. So there's no doubt its a steep learning curve this year but we've already had some successes  image.  BTW can the shallots stay growing as small bunches or should I have thinned them out?

Picked tayberries, lots of blackcurrants, some red gooseberries (more to come) and blueberries. Rhubarb not ready yet, or red and whitecurrants.

  • Blackberries?  wow thats early isn't it?  We built a wooden fruit cage so lots of blackcurrants and raspberries now the birds can't get them. I leave some out for them anyway lol.  Making jam right now.

That sounds wonderful for a first year, Dandylion - well done image

Broad beans, carrots, rhubarb (now a bit late - I'd leave yours now, Gardenmaiden), blackcurrants, gooseberries.  The birds have had ALL the redcurrants, unsurprisingly, since I forgot to pull the netting down last time I went awayimage

  • Thanks guys but can't take too much credit as the soft fruit was already planted and just needed some pruning and supporting etc.  I was going to ask Gardenmaiden about her rhubarb, I think you're right Steve as mine's usually done by end June/July.
