Cotinus is lovely SGL (have several plants in my garden) and it responds well to hard pruning. I think, however, that Bekkie wanted an evergreen hedge & all the cotinus shrubs I have are deciduous  - which is a shame because they provide some nice backdrops to other plants in the summer.

I had another thought - Sarcococca or Christmas Box - evergreen, slow growing, very clippable and producing those heavenly scented flowers in winter. Hope the following image loads properly...

Those smoke bush wotsits are gorgeous, but i like them best left to grow big image

A rose would be perfect with that hedge SGL image

I considered xmas box too, got a rather large one in the back garden i could move and propogate, oh darn it, i had just talked myself into using the pyracantha from the bottom of the garden! image on saying that i was all up for hardy gardenias yesterday! Forgot ive got to factor in my nextdoor neighbour "helpfully" trimming the hedge....think thats what did for the one im digging out!

Quite fancy that eleganus stuff, smells amazing! image

Thats true SGL, eeek, think i will change my mind a million times before its done! image

I even thought about climbing hydrangea,as there is a low chainlink fence between us,dunno if that would need clipping tho image

By the way SGL - I love your hypericum hedge - haven't seen it grown like that before.  I think the right rose / honeysuckle / whatever scrambling over an arch would look lovely image

    Thank you Topbird.

I've got a climbing Hydranga beks, had it nearly 2yrs. Not sure it grows quick enough to cover fence to form a hedge. Really love it tho.

Love love love rugosas! But they arent evergreen, laurel would be perfect if they did one with smaller leaves, shame really as ive got a few plants that need a home! image

Bekkie - if you want this hedge to be slow growing, but ideally you'd like to use cuttings from plants you already have, then how long are you expecting to wait to get full coverage to 3 footimage

Ive got quite a few plants Chicky, im a monkey for buying or propogating things, then having nowhere to put them! Im not bothered about it getting to 3ft any time soon, it will give my flower bed a chance to establish with max light levels.

I could live without a hedge, but feel like ive got to put something there, dunno if thats odd! image
