Its not only the pests surviving the winter... I found a lovely salvia hot lips flower under the snow. Wish I'd got a picture to post. Also.some wallflower hiding out there too, again revealed under a pile of snow.
Ooh cold today. Started at 7.45am, defrosted car, minus 3. By the time I got to Derby, it was minus 5,. Up the A6 towards the peaks, and minus 7. Back roads still treachorous, no sign of gritters. The student working with us was one of those stuck at Woodall services on boxing day night. As she says, the M1 was dire. Coming back it had warmed up a bit, only minus 5 at 6.15 pm.
Very hard frost this morning, so hard, in fact, my car would not start half way through the morning. So I phoned the man down the road and he arrived with a heavy weight battery early afternoon. Apparently he' had 7 similar calls by then. It wasn't an old battery either but they don't seem to make 'em like they used to. I'm off to my son's tomorrow with two puddings for a family gathering and of to Paignton on Friday with a PP lecture for a geo symposium. I wouldn't like to let either lot down. Otherwise a bright sunshine day again
It was minus 8.5 C in Duffield, Derbyshire as I went through at 8.15 am this morning. The peaks had a lovely hoar frost, but still no gritters on the roads to the peaks.
Some poor horses in a field by the Derwent in Derby, huddled together, no blankets, no shelter, the field flooded and then frozen. Someone had thrown them a bale of hay. Why do people keep horses in apalling conditions like that?
Monday 29th*: started with intense frost covering all cars, rooftops and any 'shadey' places. Tried to defrost car windows (& door rubbers) for 1/2 hour - my navigator decided that we could postpone intended superstore grocery trip until later, after wintry sun had 'caressed' the car for an hour or so!! pm saw intensely blue sky & light winds - frost melting off all sunlit surfaces.
*Tweenty-umteenth wedding anniversary - similar weather to 'the great day' as I recall.
Tuesday 30th: much milder here in sunny SW Pembs - light SW breeze, no frost left from yesterday, even deeply shadowed borders have defrosted. Broken cloud throughout daytime, building & closing over toward nightfall.
