My favourite one is when I was painting murals in the Caribbean for a hotel, the owners asked me to brief the carpenter on some mirror frames. He was a very dignified local man, old enough to be my father. I described what was needed in terms of wooden mouldings to go round these mirrors. He thought for a minute and then said 'You'll need some rabbits'. For once in my life I was speechless, but being diplomatic I muttered, 'whatever you think is needed'.
Later I realised that rabbit was the local pronunciation of rebate.
