I splonked around on the edge of this pond type acre sized plop of water, and wrenched up a few weeds, mud and gunk, into a bucket, and brought it home to drop into the aspiring pond. It contained all the necessary stuff for multiplying, and a few other thingies to make it habitable for various life forms. it takes off in a force of its own. Beautiful to watch and delight in ! It's a good watering hole for passing bees and wopsies. Keep a eye on the smally green stuff that can try to take over the pond surface, tho'. To try steal a march on nature, you can always get some pollywogs in the early spring and dunk them in. The survivors always come back to where they hatched out, and so you don't have to do it again. Apart from this , just let access for creepy crawlies into the yard, and it will look after itself.  Haway th'lads !

Further more, and in addition to,     I believe that both toads and frogs can climb reasonably  well, so, perhaps climbing a metre or so, ain't too much sweat for them, if , that is, they DO sweat !    Tree frogs ?  I've had 'em using my head as a launch pad in the tropics !  TRUE ! ! !

  • Hi Chrissie! Oh dear! Back to square one now!!! Do I risk the trough ..or.... Dig up my patio?? Or both!!

Hi Lynne- it's difficult isn't it. If you'd rather not dig up your patio, have a raised pond and add some pots and containers of varying sizes round about it, and a collection of large and small rocks and pebbles etc (artistically positioned! ) to give access. Some of those on the inside of the pond as well so that anything falling in can get out. If you incorporate a bit beside the edge to sit on for wildlife watching you'll be sorted! image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I need a bigger patio!!!!!! To be honest I am not really into gardening as such but I am passionate about wildlife, particularly frogs, toads and newts! All the suggestions on here have been very helpful and very varied... I think I will have a smallish pond actually sunk into the ground with sloping access etc AND a container pond too, and see what happens! I can't wait to get started!!! Thanks for all your help guys! I'm sure I will have more questions later! image

If you can stick some pix on here as you go along, then you'll get advice and help with any problems too Lynne. It's always handy if others have had hands on experience of building or constructing things - you can learn by the mistakes they've made!

not that I've ever had to do that myself of course...imageimage
