I had a woodpigeon drink from the pond today image I was so pleased.

Just thinking out loud here folks - I've put turf back round the edges of the pond then banked up some soil behind them. Would this turf look better trimmed with shears or allowed to grow long? The latter would be more natural I expect. All these decisions image

Shall we wait for some pond experts? image

    HI fellow 'pond-er-ers'...image

I'm not keen on the long grass thing, mainly because it looks messy- I'd rather see planting and neat grass round the edge - but I suppose it's a personal thing. It depends on which place you view the pond from too. If there's a definite 'back' to it you could leave the  grass longer for wildlife and keep the front clear. At my last house the position of the pond meant that we couldn't have left it long - it would really just have looked uncared for.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think I'm with you on that Fairygirl. There is a fine dividing line between natural and messy. Anyway with the marginal and bog plants I'm planning, there should be plenty of cover for emerging frogs etc. I'm going to post a couple of pics as a progress report image

The banked up soil on the left I think I'll sow with grass seed. The far end is where our first Border (Scampy in the avatar) is buried. The right hand side,I've dug a trench about 18" to 2ft wide following the curve of the pond and installed some liner for bog plants. I also raised the right hand edge of the pond because it was lower there. Just waiting for some rain to top it up now.
