I thought I had the driest hands in the world but they don't crack like yours seem to.  I have tried every cream on the market, and I find that a thin cream, frequently applied, does much more than the thick ones which tend to stay on the skin surface and dont get absorbed.  So try a lightweight hand cream and just apply two or three times.

The best hand cream I've ever used was the lanolin-based udder cream I used to apply to the udders of my herd of dairy goats - it kept them, and my hands, silky smooth image

  • Hi Bekkie,

I have problems with my hands that flared up after the twins were born.  My were cracked and bleeding and absolute agony. I went to the docs and they prescribed me a steriod cream to clear it up as they were so bad they had become slighlty infected, might be worth a trip to GP just incase. Have since discovered that anything with methylisothiazolinone in it causes they to flare up. This is in most cleaning products, baby wipes and toiletries and i have found that if i avoid these things with it it helps.  I also got some really thick moisturising cream for my hands from the gp as well.  Needless to say gp wasnt great at figuring out what was causing it but i managed to work it out myself with trial and error and they said that something had obviously sensitised me to this.  I then remembered putting my hands into water to remove an item of clothing i had soaking in a stain remover and the stain remover was bubbling on my skin and they my problems started, so defo watch what you touch without gloves!image

Dove, I used to use the lanolin based stuff, but it did not really agree with my skin. One of the best skin treatments I have ever used was when I treated myself to a hand treatment at a fancy place in London. They nearly passed out when they saw my 'building site hands' and plunged them into warm paraffin wax. Apparently it used to be a treatment for arthritis sufferers to ease the pain, but it gets all the dirt out and leaves your skin soft. I then bought a block of it from the chemists and used it in a bain marie for several years. image

Fidget I use Eucerin because that has urea content, have a hand and foot one.

Eucerin is good too. You can get both Eucerin and flexitol heel balm on prescription.

What you guys are saying makes sense, im a little ocd about cleaning, always got some sort of cleaning product on my hands, then theres the alcho gel too! Just need ti give up housework-i wish! It even hurt to get a tissue out of my pocket earlier! Stupid hands! image

I brought my nan one of those paraffin things, doubt it was ever used! Might look into one, its just difficult not doing anything for that long! image

Have you tried using natural cleaning products Bekkie, if you don't already, so there are no harmful chemicals on your hands?  Something like Method or Ecover. My hands are worse if I wear gloves than when I don't as long as it's Method I'm using but can't use 'chemical' cleaners......just a thought image

Ive used ecover etc, but the one i got wasnt anti bac, i get a bit freaked and have to "anti bac" everything, silly really, i know its not good and i know we can kill most nasties that we consume, the garden and animals dont bother me, its just other humans????

Do you know if method etc do an anti bac range? Ive brought a steamer, but have found it a bit hit and miss, ok for the floors, but not as good as a scourer and bleach (my kitchen floor is cream lino!)

It sounds like my house is spotless, it most certainly isnt!

Ive just realised, i always wear gloves in the garden, but never in the house to clean, how stupid! Maybe thats half the problem! image
