I'm with Fairygirl on the front border,a  nice mix of shrubs should do the trick.  Maybe something similar to what you had in your back garden.  ;)

Seriously, although I'm late to the thread you've done a great job, I wish I had your energy!

Thanks for the suggestions guys, re the tree, I think some of the suggestions may be a little on the big size from what I have been reading they are about 3mtr by 3mtr and I think we are looking for something smaller, easy to look after and would suit a south facing garden.

Also when would be the best time of year to plant a tree?

I agree with Liriodendron, a crab apple, blossom in spring, pretty coloured fruits in autumn. Lots of varieties to choose from. If pot grown, then any time, but autumn is always a good time, will get rained in and have time to settle down before next year's growth.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

On a separate note I thought I better post some more pics of the lawn progress, I guess the pics do not really do it justice, it looks better in the flesh, I cut it again to day and used the rest of the fertilizer.

This is it at 4 weeks

I also cleared  all the old mortar and weeds today from the patio ready for me to attempt to re-point it myself.

I think a BIG pat on the back is in order Mr Toast! Looking good!

How about an Euonymus alatus for the front garden?

Thanks, I must say I find it hard to believe that is only 4 weeks growth.

Euonymus alatus, Thanks for the suggestion. I think we need to go to one of them places, I think they call them a garden centre, or something, and see if we can see something that appeals to us both.

My Wife seems keen on filling the front borders with lots and lots of spring bulbs.

  • Great idea Mr T - bung 'em in and forget them, and they come up every year.  image  Fab grass, by the way - almost fluorescent!
