Maskotka tomato seeds

  • Hi everyon. I am just getting into gardening and though enjoy it I am at times struggling with what goes where how and when (I never realised how complicated it can get) so this looks like a great place to ask.

I am growing Maskota tomatoes and am quite proud with how they are growing  I have grown them from seeds and they are now healthy little plants. ( did go over the top though and have ended up with 27 plants whoops) ready for planting out.

Firstly is now the right time to plant out?

i am wanting to plant them in a trig so is this suitable?

do I need to add companion plants?

how far apart should I plant them?

and once out do they stay out or will I still need to put them under cover?

sorry for the list of questions but I really would like to get it right.

    Thank you

    1. May  :)
    2. Trig ? What is this?
    3. Basil is a companion plant but only in a greenhouse environment before late June imo.
    4. They can stand a pots width apart but not fussed.
    5. They can stay out once the warmer weather is here. Hopefully early May but end May to be safe and sage.

    Good luck

My free seeds didnt do very well at all, I have had 6 germinate, and they are much smaller than my other cherry toms which have been sown a month later.

Anyone else having poor germination with these?

Four varieties of toms ... all sown on the same day and treated exactly the same ... they’re the ones on the right in the first pic ... and in the closeup you’ll see only two seedlings so far. 😞

  • Sowed half the pack on Tuesday - got about 4 germinated so far. Wondering whether to take the lid off and let it dry out a bit as the compost is soaking in the heat/humidity on my windowsill!

Sowed four, four came up. So 100%, though not a huge sample size!

Sowed the full packet and got 26 plants.
  • I didn't count how many seeds I planted but packet said there were approximately 40 and I've got around 27 germinating. And you can see from the gaps I have in the tray that quite a few didn't germinate. This is day 15. I don't know if this is good or bad growth as I've never grown tomatoes from seed before but looking at Dovefromabove's other varieties planted at the same time it doesn't look brilliant. However, I probably only need 1 or 2 plants anyway  :) Also, so that I could see where I was placing the tiny seeds I put a layer of kitchen paper down. Don't know if that affects how they grow...
  • I only managed to get 6 plants from about 20.  I have transferred to a bigger pot each but much less stronger than the other tomatoes I have planted!

Didn't count the seeds planted in the tray but only 2 germinated much like "Dovefromabove". Now in larger pots in cold frame - hopeful!
