Ah, potentilla! That could be it. Label mislaid so checked web sites, geum doesn't seem quite right so was hoping the leaf would give a clue. I've never split it, just let it flower, although I must start to cut back some of the surrounding plants - love a full border.

When everyone wAs wishing for pink geums a while ago I googled in images and both geums and potentilas came up
I've noticed the two names bring interchanged a lot- especially when I was searching online for some different ones recently. I wonder if they used to share a name or something? I just looked it up and they are both members of the rosaceae family.
