image Such a beautiful rose Marion, always quality from David Austin. What a thoughtful family you have.

  • Looks like the jury is out on the Cucamelons Marion! I believe that you can pickle them, so keep me posted if you babies get any bigger. The Rose looks lovely-Golden Celebration is definitely for you!! I have just bought 'Shropshire Lad' for my front garden from David Austin, and he is showing buds already. Did you see any of the Air Balloons go over your house yesterday? The ones I saw take off whilst the morning news was on were quite spectacular. Lovely day here in Stoke-on-Trent, so been out feeding, watering, and taking a few cuttings.

No, Linda, the balloons did not come our way though they have in the past.  On my 64th birthday 64 of them flew over our local park where I was giving my little grandson a swing.  I counted them for him and could not believe there were exactly 64!  We have had a few showers today but I have tons of plums needing picked before the bad weather arrives tonight so will go out and rescue them in my old raincoat just in case.

A very very wet garden this morning and steady rain now at 7.30.  The forecast for the next five days is for lots of heavy rain too and as it is still warm there will be loads of growth on the runner beans, potatoes for Xmas and sweetcorn as well as the late sown annuals.  Such an interesting summer of growth in the garden in my Golden year.

Steady rain here too, thank goodness the wind dropped.

Checked on the allotment on yesterday,  secured all canes harvested another bowl of raspberries and generally tidied up. I think I may have said that a group of us are looking after a neighbours allotment until the end of the year, sharing part of it anyway, planted sweetcorn, runner beans and potatoes, just enough for what I need. The raspberries form a nice. 'hedge' between us. Started a small kitchen garden

purple sprouting broccalli, more runner beans (a late trial) late beetroot in the black tubs and much to my surprise a tomato plant  from last year! It obviously didn't get potted on, died back and has been quietly growing  in side border I use for plantlets.

One of the gardens I visited last week was Wollerton Old Hall Gardens. No photos I'm afraid but if you have a  moment go to their web site: it is just like being there without the lovely smells.

Flumpy1, I used to have sideways photos when taking a portrait one, now find that if I 'crop' them to take out unwanted background they will appear the rightway up.  Bit of a fiddle but worth it. image
