Kef's idea sounds like a good one Mrs G The 'budget' alternative would be my 'rose', aka stick, from the pound shop! Think that would be a little too budget though I'd stick with others suggestions . . . . am getting my coat now
Thanks Panda, off to see what GCs have so I'm getting my coat also. Budget is my line at the moment as only a 2day a week worker now (altogether now...ahhh) so if something looks good and healthy it may just be the one! Doesn't help having spent half the morning adding pennies up - but hey the other half was spent planting FBs snowdrops! I'd forgotten how wonderful it is to be out there
I've bought gc roses MrsG, they have grown well. What about another type of plant/shrub that is red being its his 60th. He could have one that could go on his patio. There are 'named' roses for different occasions perhaps you could get one of those, he might not have that one. Good luck MrsG with your hunting.
The sun is doing its best to peek in through the blinds at work. I hope its going some way into drying out the UK.
Feeling very unmotivated at work today, I really need to win that lottery so I can afford to work part time. If I had a pillow I'd be asleep on my desk right now!
Trying to inspire myself by trying to work out how I want the planting around the apple tree to be laid out... and indeed what plants I could grow there in the relative shade of the tree / green house. I've dug all the soil to dig in more fresh top soil and fertiliser for the tree (half of its roots area will be covered by slate) and the moss I was digging through assures me that its not the sunniest of spots! I wanted to put herbs like rosemary there but I'm now not sure it'll be bright enough.
Greenhouse was 1'C this morning and the pond partly frozen over. My poor fish are coming back from their holiday home this weekend all being well - I hope its not too much of a shock to them! We haven't any plants in it yet (non are available and I left my old pond plants at the other house) just plastic drain piping I've rigged up to act as an area for them to hide in.

Thanks Edd, I'd not thought of that, great idea and possibly the way I will go (but now I have an excuse to go to the GC can't not can I?)
Thanks Lily, not sure they'll be in budget.

seeing as it's sunny, OH wants a walk out in the sunshine (as opposed to yesterdays rain and wind). So I'll see you later.
Lovely and sunny here as well, but think I would need a lilo, or a dingy to enjoy the garden today.
The water level is continuing to drop and the bitter wind might help to dry stuff a bit.
