The house they are buying is actually empty. The owner offered to let them rent the property for a peppercorn rent until the purchase was complete as the woman at the bottom of the chain is due to have a baby in a weeks time and was threatening to pull out if she wasn't in the property by early December.
He changed his mind on Thursday (the day before the move). First he said he wanted a £12k non returnable deposit before they moved in. Two hours later he changed his mind again and said he wanted a £25k non returnable deposit. Secondborn wasn't prepared to do either as searches hadn't been completed. Her solicitor said there was no way he would be able to complete the purchase before the end of Jan. Secondborn obviously doesn't want to start again as she would be moving around the time the baby is due. It's about time property laws were updated in this country.
Lovely to hear you're ok B'man - we were all worried about you. Didn't realise you were Hawick
Hope doc is on the mend Mrs doc. Kind of you to let us know, and sending love to you both. You've had a lot to deal with recently xxx
Oh Yvie - I really don't know what to say. That is utterly hellish. Thank goodness you're able to help them out. The vendor sounds a right dodgy b*****. Hope he doesn't mess you all around any further.
When we were selling the last house, the woman buying it was a real cow. A liar as well. She strung us along for months, (knowing that the house was tricky to sell because of type, size, location etc) maintaining it would all be completed by Christmas, blaming the buyers of her house blah, blah, blah. I had to buy another house and it had a knock on effect with that. It turned out that she hadn't owned her own house for six months, so couldn't legally sell it, hence the endless delay. If she'd been honest up front it wouldn't have been a problem. We have a different system up here, but it can still be awkward sometimes.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Yvie, that's a terrible situation! How can anyone behave like that, particularly to a pregnant lady? It's great you've been able to help them out. Hope you all have a lovely cosy Christmas together.
Dove, my pastry recipe sounds very like yours, except it has lemon zest instead of orange. The combination with home-made mincemeat is definitely a winner! Must try not to eat too many before the visitors arrive next week...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Liri - I might try lemon for the next batch, you can try orange
Yvie ((hugs)) flippin 'eck! Bring back the old days when you didn't expect to Complete until 6 weeks after you'd Exchanged and the date of Completion and consequently the moving date were written in stone in the Contract. I know, many many years ago I used to type the Contracts and the Conveyances!
Christmas must nearly be here - I've put myself on the outside of a Tia Maria and Coke
Found the Tia Maria in the Aged P's sideboard when we cleared the house and it's been in a box in the garage ever since - until today when I was searching for the baubles for the tree
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
In France if you agree to buy a house you give a huge deposit and if you pull out you don't get it back and the sellers can't change their mind either. You don't get any people messing about anyway.

When we bought our house the previous owner didn't finish moving out till 8.30pm. Good job I wasn't moving my things in that day, or using a removal firm! The extra expense would have been shocking Have also had friends who's buyers have said they can't afford the house at the last moment and have demanded money off the purchase or they would pull out. People like that, and yours Runny, disgust me. I don't know how people can behave like that
When I sold my last house in the UK the solicitors buyers apparently has been misinformed about the agreed price and on the afternoon before completion they came to me and asked me to drop the price by £5000 because of "my mistake". At the time I was single and that £5000 would have made all the difference, I was very apologetic about their solicitors error but stood my ground. Surprisingly at 8:30 the next morning (completion day) they agreed to pay the agreed asking price - never could decide if they were just chancing their arm or not, I had never liked them from the start. The worst of it was I had drowned my sorrows the evening before thinking it has all fallen through and then had to vacate the property with a terrible hangover - not the best way to do it, all the last things to pack were just thrown willy nilly into boxes, took weeks to find everything.
I bet every one of us has a horror story about moving - there really should be an easier way.

When I sold my last house two weeks before we were due to move the buyers decided they wanted to drop the offer by £10k, I told them to 'go away' and sold again two weeks later. We lost the house we were buying and had to find another, two weeks again before we were due to move we were told that the house we were buying couldn't be sold because the current owners were in arrears. That time we just moved out and broke the chain. Needless to say I'm never moving again.

Cheers Dove, I've broken open the Bailey's, had a sore throat after choir practice, needed something soothing.
