Tracey, dahlia have  big seeds and pretty easy to grow from seed. They will flower in the first year, then die down to a tuber that you can store frost free over winter and then restart the next year. I just keep the best ones to overwinter.  If you get a really good one, you can then  root  cuttings off of the new shoots in the spring.

Hi Tracey. As Fidget says very easy to grow from seed. Dahlias are tubers (its basically bit like an enlarged root where the plant stores food to overwinter). Hope that helpsimage

Actually, I am being a complete muppet because it was a tuber in the packet, it looked like lots of little long bulbs but the man (with the lady I gave it to) said that it was just one plant......that's when I decided it would have a better home with them!

I like that explanation allium image

Right, if I can't get a 'tuber' I am going to get some seeds....I CAN do this image

Tracey - my dahlia seeds are sprouting on the windowsill.  After recommendations on here i am trying some called "Bishops Children" - which are meant to be dark leaved like the Bishop dahlias (llandaff, dover, leicester etc etc).

Lily - best wishes for your friend - sending positive thoughts for her
