Morning all Miserable, cold and overcast here Which is typical as I have a friend coming over and I had hoped we could sit in the garden Guess I better do some tidying indoors then
FiL popping in for lunch, after that I will be pricking out my cosmos and cucumbers. GH will then look rather full.
brilliant day yesterday. Inspiring and very entertaining lectures by Tom Stuart Smith and James Alexander Sinclair, a wonderful tour round Abbey House Gardens (swathes of tulips everywhere, and very atmospheric and clever garden design ....just beautiful). Plus some sticky plant labels meant a dicentra valentine, anchusa royal lodden and omphaloides (??) cherry ingham from Hardys accompanied me home
Hello all! Dull here, but the smilies haven't deserted us
Thank you for your kind words re my "hollow" and garden. At the moment the garden is driving me bonkers due to the amount of moss and (particularly) liverwort which is smothering alpines and ground cover plants in the shady bits. It's really hard to remove - give me weeds with proper roots any day! Not sure if there's anything I can do to deter the liverwort other than liming (too many lime-haters for that to work), and increasing the humus content of the soil (I'm trying to add garden compost whenever I can). So I can often be found at present on my hands and knees with an old kitchen knife, fiddling little bits of moss etc out of plants which can't breathe...
DD, your rockery will be wonderful, just like the rest of your garden - but don't forget, there's no deadline for shifting all that stone. Please take care with your back!
Verdun, I had visions of you being blown away yesterday. Hope no damage was done down your way - it was windy enough here...
Lesley, don't worry. I'm calling it The Hollow for now!
I'm out singing all afternoon and evening (3-hour rehearsal, followed by evening performance, of Mendelssohn's "St Paul") - a marathon session. No more gardening until Tuesday I think.
Have fun folks!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Very grey and dull here, not sure what I'm doing today, have got a blinding headache, supposed to be going to Firstborn's for lunch but may cry off and send hubby on his own.
I like the hollow too. Important to have seating areas even if they do just get used as holding areas for plants. One of mine is doing just that after I cleared two beds of too happy geranium phaeum and endressii and some hemerocallis.
No gardening yet today but thinking about it. It's bright and sunny but there's a chilly breeze so only 8C and the bed I want to do is in shade till 3pm so until then I might just go and take some photos of all the daffs so I know where the big gaps are for next autumn's planting and then prick out some babies in the shed.
Hope your head clears Yvie.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
