Off to my hortsoc/garden club now to hear (and see pics of) great gardens of Russia. Will take notes for you Dove, just in case the Great Russian Adventure ( which henceforth will be referred to as The GRA as my typing speeds are not great) takes you within striking difference of any of them. Also will find out the programme of lectures for 2014 - hope its a good one. No pressure Woody, but some of us get very excited about our monthly lectures . Chris Beardshaw has been the best so far - although i have to say i've hardly ever been to a bad one. I could sit and listen to someone talk about plants and gardens any day of the week.
Hi all, had a nice result while re-insulating my loft over the last couple of days. What's this got to do with gardening you may ask? Well, when I lifted the tired old insulation, underneath was a one inch layer of vermiculite granules. So, out with the leaf blower set to suck and now have two very large black sacks full of free vermiculite.
However, got home today to see a letter from EON. Thanks to this governments ineptitude in 'simplifying' electricity tariffs, my "economy" 10 rate has gone up nearly 18%! Thanks for much, much less than nothing..
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Hello everyone. I'm new on the forum and reasonably new to gardening.
I would really appreciate some advice please. I have a couple of raised beds that I grew vegetables in this year. Now they are empty, do I need to cover them with plastic or something for the winter, or are they okay being left as they are? Thank you.
hi garden gal and welcome .i leave my beds open and fork over and put some fresh compost and leaf mould in and fork in. and let the winter break it all down . i will cover with glass etc early spring to to warm the soil
Hi Garden Gal, if there's nothing in there just leave it alone, maybe dig in some manure, others will advise on this. I don't 'do' veg but lots of people on here will be able to help. Enjoy the forum.

Just been out to close the GH and already there's a thick frost.
