Liri, I have a small lilac, don't know the name but it only grows about 4ft. I have it planted at the foot of a Rowan Tree (not really a tree it's a large stump about 10ft tall and covered in ivy. The area, as you would imagine, is fairly dry but the soil is good (neutral). At the moment it is covered in flower buds. It's in sun for most of the day. I only feed it with FBB in the spring and don't cosset it in any way. Hope this helps re conditions.
Ive just bought Dicentra Alba from plantsforshade so it had better be ok in a shady spot.
My dicentras do well in shade, but pretty damp shade - don't think they like it too dry. Might try an astilbe there too - never thought of that as a combination before.
I grow my Dicentra Albas in partial shade, they do light up the area and flower for quite a long time. The one in a slightly lighter area does not do as well, but they are not in full shade -
Had a busy couple of days in the garden ( at last got stuck in), too much to tell but I will pop some pics up. New flagstones and path for my new garden furniture, all looks a bit shiny and new for now, hope it will settle.
I have discovered a dicentra, had a vague recollection of it from last year but it looks fab this year. Have also just bought a white one for a semi shady spot so hope it will like it, lovely, lovely plants.
Here's my new 'trellis terrace', was a mud patch before and overgrown but now have two lovely clematis coming to life and a lovely climbing rose going across it. Probably had too many coffee breaks here today but the scent of the Daphne is so gorgeous it's addictive. Shadow liked it too as you can see, nice shady spot for him.
Finally too my new rosebed has a path and a seat, sweetpeas (c/o GW mag) are planted around it and a beautiful deep red clematis too, hollyhocks and sedum to the left, tiny yet but here's hoping. Bareroot roses doing ok so far too.
Also, farmer behind me planted his potatoes yesterday so for the first time in six months my view of a pile of manure has gone, perfect timing, and he did give me several barrowloads too.
Veg patch half dug over, will finish tomorrow, and some lovely pics of magnolia, another lovely surprise and my tulips looking good too.
Feel like am slowly getting on top of it and bringing it back to it's former glory. Back, fingers and knees aching, tired as can be but very happy with the progress, at last starting to look like a garden not a jungle (for now).
Good night all, will read back and catch up on all your efforts now, if I can stay awake.

Thanks Chicky, I know it's not perfect but it was so overgrown when we got here and my budget is miniscule so I do feel a real sense of achievement. Really looking forward to seeing the summer flowers in full bloom, greenhouse is full of little seedlings.

A three month heatwave would be welcome, though up here it would probably be taken ass the end of days!

Dove, DM website?

I have two astilbes in the same border as the dicentra and they like it there. It doesn't get really dry and is shady for 90% of the day.
Lovely - astilbe shopping is next on the list then - anyone have any favourites??
