  • Just been out to top up feeders, thaw the birdbath, put out chopped apples and raisins for the blackbirds and mealworms for the robins and the wrens.  It's still flippin chilly and the ground is frozen hard.

With the terracotta pots - they're quite decorative, with ornamental frills and furbelows applied separately by the 'potter' and in the main it's these that are falling off, moisture having got between the body of the pot and the ornamentation and then frozen.  Most of them are pots that my parents bought for their new garden when they retired from the farm and moved to Southwold, so they're getting on for 40 years old so they've not done too badly.

  • Morning all,

Hope everyone is well and keeping warm. even in tropical Cornwall the pond was frozen this morning.

I had an agapanthus in a large terracotta pot  and when I lifted it to put in the greenhouse over winter the pot broke in half. It was the roots of the plant that forced it apart rather than the cold. I might attempt to stick the pot back together as it was a nice pot.

  • Sorry about your pots Dove, but like you say its a good excuse to go shoppingimage

For some reason the blackbirds here ignore the apples and eat the chips/ leftovers i chuck out for the foxes, they seem fond of roast spuds too! Feels like a bit of a snub after i went and got all manner of "proper" food for them! image
  • Has anyone got a remedy for a raging sore throat? Ive not got a cold or anything, just this soreness, the back of my throat is red and lumpy, have been taking strong pain meds as usual, but that only takes the edge off......heeeelp please image

Good morningimage.  Better late than never.  I can't seem to get myself going this morning since going for a walk.  A very slow walk as it's treacherous underfoot.

Pity about the pots Dove.  I didn't think you needed an excuse to go shoppingimage

Bekkie I can't think of anything special for your throat apart from honey, which may soothe it a bit.  Are you sure it's not tonsillitis?

  • Be careful Lesley! We dont want anymore trips or slips! image. I never got any tonsils, so i dont think so, wouldnt really know, sorry. Will try anything at the moment...erm what do i do with the honey? Got to go out in a bit so will get some image

Bekkie I just read that gargling with warm salty water is meant to helpimage.  Just have a spoonful of honey as it is or in a little warm water (whisky is optional).  Hope it eases soon.

    Morning all.

Still bitterly cold here, so we now have a layer of ice on top of the snow, not a good combination

Bekkie dissolve honey in hot water and squeezed lemon juice, does help, but I would also take a NSAID, such as Brufen.

My clever Robins have learnt to handle the seed feeders and are now fighting off the Tits.
