Hi all, joining the discussion on supplements a bit late. My recent experience may or may not be of interest. I used to take a cocktail of multivits. Vit C , selenium. and a couple of others. I stopped a couple of years ago. I haven't really noticed any difference if I am honest.
However that didn't stop me ordering some more when I was recently diagnosed with a problem with one eye.
It's that insurance policy effect. If it works , great, if not what have you lost? Not much.
Feel sorry for cold and flu sufferers My Dad always used to say if you treat a cold it will be better in seven days and if you don't treat it it will last a week.
Archie have a lovely weekend with the family. Very envious of your trip to Monte Carlo - it's quite a place. LilyP I obviously felt the same as you about the cars
I have written here before on some of the more " alternative " therapies, acupuncture has been of enormous personal benefit.
The issue of vitamins, supplements is however a very different matter, with a huge amount of unsubstantiated claims being made. This would be fine, if it was not for the vast amount of money that people were being conned out of.
If you take Vitamin C for example. It is a water soluble vitamin, and large number of trials have shown, that if taken in doses over 100mg. a day, the extra will all just appear in the urine. 100mg, is far less than the amount ingested in an average diet.
Selenium is more interesting, as it does have an effect on the immune system, and diets in the UK are quite low, compared with Canada and the US. The main source being wheat, and for some reason our wheat has less than their wheat.
For several years we used to supplement the nutrition of patients on ICU for this reason. However a recent well conducted clinical trial found that, there was an increase in the numbers of people developing tumours in the Selenium supplemented group.
I could bore for England on this subject, but think I should probably stop now. I think we should all be aware of the effect " Big Pharma " has on all of this.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Morning all! Work is dragging me under right around now. Who needs sleep or rest or time to wash your socks right...? (& I'm loving it!)
Well other half points out this isn't healthy in the long term and that I must put down the works laptop and concentrate on my hobbies some more. Though this may mean weeding by candle light! So I'm back! To muse inspiration for what is a very half completed garden right now.
Going to a craft fair (English) near Brantome this morning. Hope to find some stocking pressies for my grown up children who don't want to give up stockings. Each adult buys a little pressie for each other adult and big red skiing socks are put in front of the woodburner with the grandchildren's socks. Usually I collect little things on my travels, but I didn't this year. It's my turn to have the family this year, 10 adults, 6 children, 2 babies.
I was a poorly peeps, but I'm nearly better
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Thank you for that info, Punkdoc, interesting. I trained as a nurse long ago and we were told that if you eat a varied diet, including fresh fruit and veg, there is no need to take vitamins. Extra vitamins don't make any difference.
