OMG Beaus - we have just had a letter from the council telling us that we will be provided with the food waste bins soon. Didn't like the idea because I thought of the smell but MAGGOTS. Yours won't smell at all then Bekkie
We only get a garden waste collection once a month so a compost bin is essential with the size of our garden but it does take ages to rot down because it's not turned often enough Gg you put me to shame.
Hello all! Actually managed to catch up on here this evening - you've obviously all been so busy in your gardens (or on holiday) that it's not been as chatty as sometimes...
After a couple of days spent with my daughter & the grandchildren, doing some macro weeding with the help of the nearly-3-year-old, it's been good to get back to my own garden. Lovely weather too!
More photos soon, when I can get on to the laptop. This netbook is working tonight though...
Time to rest the aching limbs I think. Night night!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I dont turn mine lesley, i just make a new heap every so often, and either bury the old one or cover it with horse poo, luckily there is a free supply close by!
The way around the maggots is to use biodegradable bags each time you add food to your bin and tie tightly, no problemo
Could I chuck some of that activator over the fence onto it? What would it do?
as if we would natter
Oh Lesley the little brown one they provide you get these special bags to put slops in and then they go in the bucket and I swear to you last summer after first week the maggots had got through the plastic, makes me heave to think of it! So I slung the whole thing into a black sack and they took it with the general rubbish ha ha and that was the end of my recycling career
Have to say im kinda regretting putting the scraps out in an old baking tray, these creatures aint quiet! I thought wildlife was supposed to be stealthy
I spose chicken kiev has the same effect on all of us!
