That’s a truly impressive late flush on your red standard @purplerallim.
It feels like autumn for the first time here today, with much needed rain and rapidly cooling temps in the evening. We haven’t lit the log burner yet though, usually it’s a struggle to hang on for the 1st of October.
A few rescued blooms - The Prince, La Rose de Molinard with the outer grotty petals picked off and Munstead Wood at the bottom:
Munstead Wood’s fragrance has oddly changed and got a lot stronger. It now smells intensely sweet old rose/bourbon. Blindfolded I would swear it was Madame Isaac Pereire!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I am planning to do a radical renovation of climbing roses. The usual advice is to wait until Dec to Feb. Nov seems too early - is that because the plants are not yet fully dormant and might regrow in tough winter conditions? I am itching to get going. Thanks
@purplerallim I find sheilas perfume black spots terribly... however its prolific and smells lovely so gets a pass! Mines in a pot and never out of flower. ------- Ive ordered a discontinued austin Geoffrey Hamilton, supposed to have great reviews. Ive also ordered some new clematis as thorncroft had a 4 for £50 offer that was too tempting to miss. They arrived today, superb quality as always! Going to scramble some through borders. Im still poorly with Covid, but hopefully I can get planting once ive shifted it, that and the bulbs!
I agree @JessicaS that Sheila's Perfumed is a black spot magnet, but the rose form and fragrance means it not only gets a pass from me, but I have two more plants taken from cuttings too.😁
@purplerallim it is worth it! Ive had dreadful spot all round the garden this year, some that dont usually get it, going to really give the roses feet a good clear and sulphur blast when im up to it, see if I can kill the spores over winter ready for next year. Its likely the weather causing so much.
@WAMS they are indeed being great nurses! On me or beside me snuggled in whenever I go downstairs.
Actually black spot, greenfly, and saw fly damage has been less this year @JessicaS Its been growth that has been less, especially of new roses, the established ones have coped.
My LoS still going too, Tack. Not many blooms at a time but respectable end of season display..
Mme. Antoine Mari:
The Prince again, I hate it when I make a decision to get rid of a rose then it fights back!
@Fire, RHS rose advice is often behind the times. Monty prunes his (repeat flowering) climbers in October and I’ve read a few sources saying autumn is a good time to thin climbers and tie in remaining canes (while still flexible?) for winter. You may prompt growth that then gets frostbitten - a workaround would be leave the laterals longer than desired then trim off any dieback in early spring. The only advantage I can see of waiting is that it’s easier to see what you are doing when leafless, but see what others think since I don’t actually grow many climbers 😆
