Does anyone have Olivia rose Austin? Was planning on buying it but heard the flowers can be quite droopy?
I have it and the flowers don't droop. It's like in the photos.

There is a thread about it here

Thanks @busy-lizzie... That's definitely on my list for this year 😊

@agnasia I too have given up on generous gardener. Mine just didn't grow at all after its  first year, I think maybe the place it was planted didn't suit, too hot and dry. I shall try something else when I find one which will fit with the colour scheme.

What are people's thoughts on Penelope Lively? Is she worthy of a prominent spot?

@cooldoc, you wondered if Peter Beales have a new rose this year. They do and I've seen it, but of course it wasn't in flower.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

@Suesyn I definitely didn’t have mine planted in the right place to start with. I moved it nearly a year ago now and while it’s not dead it isn’t doing much! I might contact DA about it but try another climber? Or give up on climbers and go for a tall shrub that can grow upwards next to the pergola rather than on it.

Also debating whether to change the front garden. I have two big hebes in bed I have and a Desdemona in a pot. I was thinking of maybe replacing the hebes with roses. The front brick wall is relatively high though so if I go down that road I would want roses that are tall enough to be seen from the pavement.

@agnasia both The Pilgrim and Queen of Sweden will fit your requirements, tall and straight.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

@purplerallim im near too, how funny! Ive missed it last few years due to clashes, oh dear used to be really good. Its saying more plant stalls than ever this time hopefully its back to being worthwhile as I can make it this time. I like it for fillers, a lot of my garden came from there originally, shame if its declined.

@Dasha im honestly pleased with penelope so far. Very heat and rain resistant, lots of flowers, good scent and even small young plants had plenty of flowers. Its holds its colour too. Ive put mine out the front with Desdemona for company.

I'm still planning to go @JessicaS as I can't pass up the chance of something different, 🙂 and ever the optimist I even have a trolley this year.😆
  • I bought Blue for You last autumn via Amazon from Carbeth Plants. I have recently realised that it is not grafted but on it's own root, and this has been confirmed by the seller.
Will this be ok? Or should I buy a grafted one from elsewhere? I would be grateful for any advice as this is one that I am really looking forward to.

Thanks @Eustace! Queen of Sweden has always been on my list so that might be a good option. I will also look up The Pilgrim.
