Sounds as if the judges are going to make it up as they go along.

A gardening competition on paper sounds like a baking competition when the judge does not taste the baking.

Sounds like a ploy to get peoples' ideas for free.
I had an art teacher who did that. He went through everyone's photos, picked the one he liked to 'demonstrate' to the class and then framed it up and sold it for loads. He is a well known local artist!!!

Don't talk to me about tutors whose PHD thesis contained large chunks of my Dissertation  >:)

  • A competition on paper still means you can steal other people's ideas if you're that way inclined. Maybe not the other entrants but all you'd need to do is scour the internet for a design, make a diagram of it and submit it as your own. There's also no shortage of gardeners who post their planting schedules in blogs. It's ripe for abuse. I've always made a point of making it known that I got the basic design for my garden from Pinterest (although I have very different planting). I don't feel comfortable taking the credit for someone else's work. Even if someone was starting from scratch with a pen and paper, what looks good in black and white may not work in practice. Even if it is a design that works in practice, the gardener could make a right pig's ear of it. Without seeing the garden in real life, it's not possible to accurately judge what's best and what isn't.

When my son was doing his landscaping and horticulture course the students were invited to design the garden for a new Huf Haus being built nearby. My son's was accepted and then for some reason declined. He found out that they had copied his design! He did eventually get paid for it.
