Mrs Beeton was a very interesting woman. She died at the age of 29, quite possibly from syphilis which her husband contracted after a liaison with a prostitute. Though her book has been almost continually in print since its inception, there is actually only one recipe in the book that was Mrs Benton’s own. Every other recipe was plagiarised from other writers or were recipes sent in by readers.

Well that's the most interesting/educational thing I've learned from one of wg's threads.
the pumpkin in the article would not even top 10 in most USA competitions. if it not over 1000 lbs you go home with no prize. my pumpkins when grew them were usually over 500 lb. the only giant veg that are usually edible are watermelon, cantaloupe and tomato
