I don't wish to be overly dramatic about this as it's not in my nature 😶🌫️ but I would just die without my pint of milky coffee in the morning! Two big heaps of Alta Rica and I'm off. As mentioned on another thread I don't do stimulants well so it's decaf for the rest of the day. Wimp! I can't suggest milk alternatives as I've never tried any but I know for sure that weak coffee is not the way to go. It doesn't really taste of anything. Strong is good either caf or decaf. Some really good suggestions further up so it looks like you'll have to get your Argo$ catalogue out! Does that even still exist?
Waitrose Peru decaf ground coffee, tasty and fruity and not at all bitter. We make ours in a cafetière. A technique I used to suggest for people trying to give up sugar in tea is to make yourself a cup ( of black coffee in this case) and just drink as much as you can, then dump the rest of the cup and have a different drink instead. Just keep doing that, don’t be tempted to add some milk ( or sugar) You’ll be able to drink a bit more each day and in a very short time, you’ll find that you have not only finished the whole cup, but are starting to appreciate the taste and really enjoy the coffee. I managed to give up both sugar in my tea, a very long time ago, and milk in coffee about thirty years ago. Be warned, if anyone accidentally gives me sugar in tea or milk in coffee, I can’t drink it- no going back!
If you're going to M&S for that instant I'd recommend their blonde ground coffee which is not too dark roasted (for a supermarket) and you can use it in a cafetiere, otherwise if bitterness is the problem then it's probably related to roasting level and the fact that most commercial coffee is far too darkly roasted.
I used to have three sugars with my coffee and one day decided to give it up it took a month to get used to it and now would find sweetened coffe absolutely disgusting. So you may get to enjoy the dark purity of your coffee given time.
Oat milk is the way to go but you might need to try more than one variety as some of them have a hint of porridge about them. We use oatly and it foams beautifully.
