Taking up black coffee late in life & not loving it.

I’m supposed to be cutting out milk, and the sticking point is coffee. It all tastes so bitter without! I’ve tried gradually cutting down, and may have to stick with that method, but still not enthused. I’m definitely not a Mellow Birds kind of coffee drinker. Wondering if anyone could recommend an easy starter coffee, which still has flavour, for black-coffee newbies. Instant or ground coffees all welcome. We use a cafetière and also have a Dolce Gusto thing, that takes pods, mouldering in a cupboard somewhere. Not planning to buy any more gadgets.

Have you tried Kenco Millicano … it’s an instant but contains a proportion of ground coffee. I find it’s a ‘well-rounded’ flavor. I drink mine strong and black or with skimmed milk.

Oat and almond 'milk' seem OK with my visitors, I use the no sugar versions. I drink black myself. Soya 'milk' is a bit inclined to clot in hot drinks

    Hi Emerion

I don't like the coffee that machines such as Senseo make.  (Even if it has a frothy top).

Personally, I have an Italian coffee pot and I can make my coffee strong or weak - whatever.  I use a good quality coffee - not stuff from Lidl - and I usually only have one cup a day just after lunch with some dark chocolate.  Without sugar or milk.

If there is any coffee leftover (in the coffee pot) - I heat it up the next day - heat - never boil!!  Coffee boiled is coffee spoiled.

Sometimes in the morning, I go to the market place (we call it The Promenade) and have a coffee with friends - usually accompanied by a glass of water.  A short black.

I don't drink coffee in the afternoon or evening.

I also have Italian coffee pots, a small one and a larger one for when there are guests. You can make the coffee strong or weak. OH doesn't drink coffee and I have just one in the morning.

Oat milk is lovely in coffee @Emerion.  Hemp milk too!

Try M&S decaf instant coffee, you'd never guess it was decaf! Mild but good depth of flavour. I've tried many non-dairy milk alternatives, some good on their own but haven't found one I like in coffee or tea.  If a lactose free dairy milk is an option for you, try Alpro, available in the normal three different fat contents.  Plus, although it contains lactose, goat's milk is also more easily digested than cow's milk. It doesn't have the flavour of goat's cheese if you're worried!

I don't get the coffee culture. I don't mind the taste of coffee cake and I like the beans set fire to on top of a Sambuca but that's as far as it goes. I often wonder if I'm missing something. Maybe I'd be the energizer bunny or maybe I'd just need to have a coffee to get back to what passes for normal now.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Well, I said I wouldn’t buy another gadget, and now I’m fancying an Italian coffee pot! Also going to try the M&S decaf. Thank you all for your thoughts 😊
