When my elderly aunts started saying something that was bound to cause an argument at Christmas, my mother would say loudly “Pass the oranges” … it was a family ‘code’ that signalled to the family not to rise to the bait and that they should change the subject …

Of course, not everyone in this forum is in the UK, or is from the UK. It's sweeping statements like that, which indicate his (her?) attitude.
It's like saying everyone in the UK drinks tea.
I don't prune my veg, so am definitely not obsessed by it. Am I stupid? That's a matter of opinion. Or do you base it on the number of qualifications I have?
