I know of no flower or leaf that is truly black.  I mean black cat black.

Black cats are usually slightly brown-ish black (at least the ones that we've had were).
I do like that Black Jack agapanthus, but not at £12.99 for a 9cm pot.
I have a dark blue deciduous agapanthus that I've forgotten the name of that gets bigger every year and shrugged off last winter with no problem. Black Pantha (which is purple and semi-evergreen) in a pot suffered and has only one shoot now but I'll see how it gets on this summer.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

An Agapanthus Navy Blue update. I have just counted 25 buds on this small group of plants. The buds are tiny, so could be more as it flowers later in the season.I did feed them last Autumn but this spring they had to get on with it. It was wet in early spring but they haven't been fed or artifically watered. We have our various regimes for looking after them. Should we stop or is this simply one of the best for flowering.

I currently have 19 buds. Evergreen. Kept in its pot against the front of the house. Was -9 here for a few days straight over winter. Feed it every fortnight from spring to mid summer.

@TheGreenMan That is good news after so many evergreen agapanthus did not survive the winter. There is hope for the new Everpanthus.
    A Navy Blue is deciduous.
    Microclimate maybe?

  • Ok, sounds promising, do you know a variety name I could look for please?

  • My agapanthus are finally recovering from the battering of weather last winter. Flower buds have  appeared on some and none seem to have died so fingers crossed.

@FionaHybridT If you are after a deciduous one as I have mentioned A Navy Blue. It was for sale at my local GC last week.
I have never grown the evergreen forms.

Agapanthus Navy Blue flower count now at 32 buds. I have spent years watering when dry and feeding this lovely plant weekly. This year total neglect on my part and these are the results!  Perhaps Mother Nature sent the right weather at the right time?
