@rowlandscastle444 that's lovely,  I hope mine get to that size one day!
I just stuck mine (sorry, ours!!), in the soil where a lavender bush had been, but got too big. The first year we had 6 flowers (yes, I kept a record). It's now been there about 10 years, and last year I divided it. One piece went back in the same place, I potted up several, and replanted a large piece. Then composted the rest.
The two in the ground survived the winter, as has one potted one. One potted one is now iffy, and the rest are gone.
I doubt I'll get any flowers this year, and since we're planning to move, probably will have to start again. Maybe!
I would like to take them, but they've settled, so will let the next owners enjoy. I don't think they'd cope with being dug up twice within 12 months.

Here's the same plant in 2019
The central bar of the fence is 75cm above the ground, which gives you an indication on the size. This is not a full-size agapanthus.

Here's a couple of views of how mine were in Aug 2022..

"Hydon Blue", the only one I have left.  This is actually two plants in pots  by my pond.  One thing agapanthus don't like is shade.  even if the shade is miles behind, they lean away and the the rain and wind do the rest.  In the borders  the rhodies and camellias keep encroaching, so I can only grow them in full sun in pots.

    General view.

The big white and the pale blue are both evergreens and are now lost.  The right hand white ia a muave tinged white, now lost, as is the deep blue.  I will rebuy the latter and will probalbly go 100% blue.

Can I ask again? when you count flowers, do you mean flowers or umbels?

location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

I count the stems as one flower. I assume there are dozens of umbels on each stalk.

Or have I got these back to front?

Lovely pics and beautiful agapanthus plants.

It's been a bad couple of years for agapanthus in the south - last year I had not a single flower, either in the ground or in my pots.  The pots were eventually dug out and they had all rotted.  The clumps in the ground look ok leaf wise, but not a single flower stem showing yet, and the same last year. I find they normally for me take over relatively seamlessly from the alliums, so I would expect to see some evidence by now.  I think they will have to be dug up if this year is a non starter.  Good luck.

    @Bede 5000
Agapanthus Navy Blue is for sale at various on line nurseries. I did buy mine at an NGS garden opening. I haven't seen it for sale in the local Garden Centres or Nurseries.

I don't buy online.  Certianly not a heavyweight like Agapanthus.  I did buy a Telegraph/T&M mail-order and was most disappointed.  The last one I bought was from a specialist at a Wisley show/sale.

Colour reproduction in the press or on ones computer cannot be relied on.

Navy-blue sounds a bit too violet for me.  But I will look out for it.  Size and leaf shape, and of course hardiness, are also factors.

Regarding RHS Plant of the Year.  What they mean is "plant introduction of the year".  Novelty is the criterion. The real "lifetime award" would go to a daffodil.

But Aga "Black Jack" ... I understand collecting, but how does one use a black flower.

They did plant of the decade a few years ago, it was Geranium Rosanne.

If you look, it is not black, but a lovely sultry purple.

The RHS are very clear, it is the new plant of the year.
