The whole point of the test is to see if it works. With so many people having mobile phones it means they can get a message to the vast majority of the population, even if you don't have a phone you probably know someone who has. I am sure that if the government did not do this then if there was an emergency someone would complain that they should have had a system in place!

Sorry, but that is paranoia. The Government can't even monitor terror suspects, as has been sadly shown. They won't be monitoring your garden cameras.
i don't know if you are deliberately being stupid? Of course they wouldn't be monitoring his garden ordinarily, but if he was a threat, those cameras would be switched on. Do you disagree?
Unbelievable nonsense posted above...those emergency systems are used internationally with great success for instance with evacuating areas due to fires etc. Since you can switch off those cell tower services what is the bloody problem? The awful image starting this thread with its fear mongering in screaming capitals (false) warning. The irony is those people that spread this rubbish somehow think they're well informed
I have lived in two other countries where these warnings were used.
Country #1: severe wind warnings in the capital. First time, everyone complied and stayed inside. No one died. Second time, everyone said well no one died the last time they said there was a severe storm. People went out. From memory, seven died.
Country #2: tsunami warning accompanied by tsunami sirens, following an earthquake elsewhere. Instant panic as almost everyone got in their cars & tried to flee inland or to higher ground. Instant gridlocked traffic on ALL roads through town, and a traffic jam on the road all along the waterfront. All at 2am. Fortunately, there was no tsunami.
In Luxembourg we get an alert every first Monday of the month to warn that at midday they will sound the nuclear alarm. First they send a text to everybody (even old phones) to say don't panic this is just a drill. Then the unpleasant whine starts at midday on the dot. So if you hear the alarm at any other time say your prayers. We have all been supplied with iodine pills. As if. I should add that this is because of Cattenom, an old French power station on the border (of course).
This was discussed on BBC Breakfast this morning. As somebody has already said in this topic, the message is being broadcast and will be picked up by any compatible device within range of the transmitter. It is not a two way event. Nothing is being sent back.

Not according to the notice at the start of this thread. You will not be able to use your phone unless you send back an acknowledgement. Why is this needed?

My last comment to you was rude and unneeded. Apologies.
