@ElbFee I haven't grown 'Young Lycidas' so cannot compare.. I did mention 'Othello' in relation to 'Gabriel Oak'.. Some roses are reluctant to produce basals as it's not in their genetics.. but hard pruning can usually encourage it and Austin's always seem to respond eventually.. that's all I can suggest really.. there's no magic answer although some claim Alfalfa works..
Here, I would use a product called Maxicrop Seaweed which I have found can induce basal growth from stubborn roses..
Went for our annual visit to David Austin's rose garden at Albrighton in Shropshire. Put on sun block and sun hat only for it to rain for most of our visit. My partner only got three pictures on her phone before we got soaked. So I've uploaded all of them.
The Long Garden
Thomas A Becket foreground right, Paul's Himalayan Musk climbing, not sure what roses are in the background.
Blush Noisette. Interested to see this pruned to be a large bush rather than a climber. It took up a lot of space but certainly had the wow factor.
After this photo the rain started. My partner got wet socks and wasn't so keen to traipse round after me as I compared roses.
We did agree on our best scented roses though. Lady of the Lake was our favourite Austin, with a lemony sherbert fragrance without a hint of rose to our noses. Pompon Blanc Parfait was our favourite scented older rose. It smelled of "fizzy elderflower cordial and Love Heart sweets" as my wife summed it up.
People were queued out of the door to get into the tea rooms due to the rain so we didn't stay that long. At least this meant I wasn't tempted to buy anything!
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
At last, Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary rose is finally opening......
.....so exciting. She will be going in the greenhouse at some point tomorrow as we have heavy downpours predicted, thunder and lightening, so need to look after her😊
Is everyone expecting rain today? Heavy through the evening it’s supposed to be here.
Top the water butts up, I used the last dregs yesterday to wash the cars. A very rare occurrence, but they’d got to a level of filthiness that even I couldn’t ignore any more!

Rachel has changed colour to the entirely orange version I dislike again. I wish mine looked like yours, @cooldoc
Re: your balling rare rose, you can let it go, @ElbFee. See Ecclesiastes 3:1-8... particularly "to everything there is a season" and "a time to die" and "a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted." And we'll just ignore the reams of Biblical texts that probably contradict that, shall we?
Allegedly there will be storms today, Mr Vine Eye, but we were predicted a rainstorm yesterday too, and not a drop. Hope everything gets a drenching.

Lovely strong sweet fragrance but of what I cannot say as I'm hopeless at identifying scents...

@Rojas your collection is my dream, Cymbeline is just gorgeous.
@Mr. Vine Eye I love your pink corner and your generous gardener inspires me to keep trying with mine.
My Bridge of Sighs and Albrighton are pretty much done for their first flush, so I’m going to try and feed them tomorrow unless the storms prevent me.
The rest are in full flow.
I have been on the fence about Roald Dahl but I am loving it this year.
Also I think Eustacia Vye is a bit crowded by other plants. I did measure it all out when I moved her, but might have to shift some bits again.
