In my RHS June mag they mentioned a Festival of Roses 17th Jun to 16th July at RHS Rosemoor in North Devon. One of the UK's biggest rose collections with 270 different cultivars with an estimated 100,000 blooms in a rainbow of colours. A Food & Craft Market is also being held on 23-25th June. A free shuttle bus from the South St Car Park at Great Torrington will run from 10 am to 4pm.
Sounds exciting so we're thinking of going if we can fit it in somehow.
..sounds wonderful @Lizzie27 If I lived nearer I would certainly be wanting to go to that.. and your 'Penelope' is to die for..
.. more lovely roses..
@Alfie_ Is it well scented? the foliage looks to be one of the Austin lines.. I would guess at 'William Shakespeare 2000'.. perhaps someone who has this rose could take a look?..
@Marlorena, thanks, Penelope gets better every year, must be over 10 years old now. Recommended to me by Helen Yemm, a garden author who also used to write a garden column in the Telegraph.
So many roses I like today... congratulations on those whose roses are only just opening, I know it's been a long and tiresome wait this Spring.. I have about 8 I'm yet to see a bloom on..
@Lizzie27 I've heard of Helen Yemm, sometimes read her pages.. she's a nice writer about roses.. I've been to Rosemoor a few times..
@Rojas Your Wild Rover will purple up in time.. if you've only just received it, it's likely they've kept it in a polytunnel..
Went to Harkness today and couldn't resist another purchase. Their Lakeland and Susie they have growing at the entrance on obelisks looked so grand:
Susie above, so many buds its crazy.
Blimey... THAT is Susie?
I have Susie. I now realise I am going to have to move it in the future or it is going to be having serious arguments with the standard. Thanks! I think the term "patio climber" lulled me into thinking it was small.
I agree with Nollie; Constance, Cornelia, Penelope and Sarah are outstanding.
@Lizzie27 I'm seriously considering whether North Devon is too far. That sounds like a good event.
@Eustace. I don't really want rose gifts but I'd be chuffed with a Mum in a Million and the rose is lovely too. Lucky you
Eden buds takean age to open but so pretty @halling
I have a new WS2000 @Alfie but not blooming yet. By all accounts a fantastic scent so looking forward to this one. I'll post a pic when it blooms.
3 roses new to me this year in pots on the balcony. I learned last year that roses come on quickly up there but pots need moving in a heatwave.Amulet MellaThe Feminine TouchEufemia
@Marlorena - It is definitely fragranced maybe medium at least. Looking at pictures I think you’re right. Thank you!
@WAMS yes I was amazed when I asked him how many Susie roses they climbed up at and he said just one . They have clearly let it get big as yeh obelisk is big so maybe it is easily tamed. He said they planted it 4 years ago.
@Tack great thanks some pictures would be great when they come.
We’re just back from the David Austin gardens. I was so worried there might not be lots to see and while there were plenty of roses in bud, there were also thankfully plenty in bloom.
Some of those that stood out, at this time of year at least.
Desdemona
Princess Anne
Gertrude Jekyll
St Swithun
Lochinvar
James Galway
This is Dannahue
It made me chuckle to find this tag at the bottom of the same rose in another pot!
I also may have bought a rose! I was surprised I was drawn to the darker colours, but that might be because they grab the eye more? In the end I was deciding between Gertrude Jekyll, James L Austin and Princess Alexandra of Kent.
