@Edhelka a rare sight your Crépuscule.
Lovely rose. Like your Saphir too. Do you know if you have the light
or the dark version of Reine des Violettes? I'd like to compare
photos.
There are two? Do you mean genetic clones drifting apart? Mine is from Beales. It is true purple in my climate, very rarely going pink. Here it is, a little bit unorganized at the moment.
@WAMS - Gardner Ben has some interesting choices and opinions on Austin roses I must say. He has a fair few top 20 and top 10 Austin videos.
His top Austins 10 are: Claire Austin (10th), Princess Anne, James L Austin, Crown Princess M, Country Parson, Eustacia Vye, Lady Emma Hamilton, Gabriel Oak, Mill on the Floss, Sylas Marner (1st).
Who's that, some youtuber? Interesting choices. Or weird, lol. They wouldn't be my choices but 100 gardeners, 100 tastes.
I don't think I've grown enough DAs to do top 10. I love Gertrude, she's my number 1 no doubt. I have 4 Gabriel Oaks and 2 Olivias, so they are clearly my favourites too. Scarborough Fair and PAoK have a special place in my heart. So that would be top 5.
DAs I used to have but don't have anymore: Charles Darwin, Scepter'd Isle, probably The Lady Gardener DAs I still have but don't like and maybe it's something else: Gentle Hermione DAs I still have but are meh: The Albrighton Rambler, Silas Marner DAs I still have, good but not top: The Generous Gardener, The Prince
DAs I liked a lot in the gardens I visited (plus a one or two that I like for other reasons): The Lark Ascending, Bathsheba, James Galway, Spirit of Freedom, Young Lycidas, Munstead Wood, Boscobel, Desdemona, Tottering by Gently, Kew Gardens, Vanessa Bell, Buttercup, Blythe Spirit And maybe some other of their older, more unique, roses. Their newer roses look all too similar to me.
@WAMS I used to check his vids just to see the habit of roses, bloom shapes etc.. stopped watching since his recent associations with breeders/vendors.. especially when every rose is superb.. I get much more reliable info here or other forums..
@cooldoc yes well said. I mean he does a 10 top roses just for scent which doesn't even feature Gertrude J so it is suspicious. @WAMS with that comment about a rose for cancer I won't be watching anything of his again. That is a joke.
I'm hopefully going to the Beales gardens this summer. Excited as heard lots of great things about them. Didn't realise they were only 30 miles from my parents house.
@edhelka great choices. I love PAoK too and Gertrude J is at the top with Chandos B for all my roses regardless of breeder from my 47 roses (I counted them today ). Gabriel oak is a new addition so I'm excited to see that flower this summer for the first time.
DAs in my top 10, The Lark Ascending, Tottering by Gently, Scarborough Fair, Bathsheba, Kew Gardens, Claire Austin, The Generous Gardener, Olivia RA, Strawberry Hill, Wollerton Old Hall. I also have The Prince, Boscobel, England's Rose, Desdemona, Eglantyne, Bring me Sunshine, Munstead Wood, had Lady of Shalott, very recently Gabriel Oak and Silas Marner so those latter two not judged yet.
So busy here, had to make time to water all the pots as it is still warm and sunny every day, water butts emptying fast. Nearly everything has at least one bloom now so if I had more time I would be in heaven. Will try to take pics tomorrow.
@Alfie_ ranking things you love is impossible, isn't it, but I really adore Gertrude Jekyll, the Lady of Shalott, the Lark Ascending, Princess Alexandra of Kent and Heritage (the last being from Trevor White).
Good to hear The Lark Ascending is a favourite. Mine is in its second year and the rate of growth has been impressive to me.
i'd been wondering if i should give it a little support? The two canes furthest left and the one furthest right are spreading outwards and i've been thinking about supporting them upwards a little, for a short period. Would you support them or just let them be?
I've just seen Ronnie O'Sullivan at the garden center. I think he was eyeing up a plant.
@Alfie_ forgot to answer your Boscobel Question.. Yes I do like Boscobels fragrance.. It is based on the Myrrh but not as intense or simple as, say Strawberry hill.. its more complex with added fruity notes as well.. As a plant, it grows a bit more upright but produces masses of blooms and more or less continuous for me.. it was at its best on its 1st year with me.. which I am putting down to the pot it is in.. I do spray, but remember it had rust and blackspot when I received as end of season (when I stop spraying).. hope this helps..
Oooh lovely roses everyone! Delighted someone else here has Brother Cadfael! It was my first Austin & of the first roses of my collection & im very fond of it.
@Eustace unusual HT with the mottled pink petals! @Marlorena lovely pond! Your Desdemona looks gorgeous, I think im missing out @WAMS id go for the beasts rose, light it nicely at night
Ive got the reds and burgundys opening so pics later, for now; New bud on Zara opening, pinky tinge suddenly. The yellow gets whiter with age. Citrus fruity scent, hints of grapefruit. Natalija with a confused late summer viticella in full bloom.... Cadfael
@Alfie_ I bought my Boscobel potted early last summer. I absolutely love it! I love the colour of the flowers - pink on the outside and coral colour in the middle. The scent I can’t even describe. I can just say it’s very unusual and I really like it. Last summer I was away for the whole of July so I don’t really know how it did mid summer but it was blooming in August/September. I’ve found the flowers were nodding down with their weight. It’s not blooming yet now but the brunches with buds are quite long so I expect them to bend once flowers open. Health wise, I didn’t have any issues at all. The rose stayed in its original pot all summer and I only repotted it during the winter.
