2021 I saw a hoopoe in the garden. 2022 I saw a hoopoe in the garden. Last week I saw three hoopoes in the garden. They are quite shy and nervous birds and the best I could manage was a distant video. I had just crept behind a tree when OH drove up the driveway and scared them off - so much for my stealth ... Today, their distinctive call alerted me to the fact they were back in the garden and one was perched high in a conifer but taking a good photo remains something to aspire to. Beautiful birds and feel blessed to share my garden with them.

Yes @floralies. forgot to mention the cuckoos, heard but never seen either and the swallows and house-martins are now back in force after a couple of very early birds in the first week of May - 3 weeks ahead of their usual schedule.
That means I can't go in the ruin and get out the garden furniture on my list to renovate this year as I don't want to disturb them. Planned to get it allout before the 21st but now I won't be feeling guilty as it won't be sat staring at me from the garage.
Plenty of other stuff to get on with and it's a joy to have these birds swooping and calling again.

I've just done my first bit of 'proper' gardening since the hip replacement in February. I'd forgot what it was like to be able to bend normally to get down to soil level. It's great

I also used it for several years without problem then one year shredded the end of my finger, thankfully not very deep.

I also get cackled at by a green woodpecker far more often than I see it and, funnily enough, the blackbirds are shy too. Heard but not seen.
