It said in the papers here the cold was so bad at your place, that uncovered hands would get the fingers frost bitten in five to ten minutes, so don't do any gardening without wearing gardening gloves!    o:)

Ps Keep yourself and family safe, Merry Christmas!

The power lines snapping/collapsing was what happened in Shetland last week @CrankyYankee . It caused power outages for a week or so. The ongoing weather made it difficult for repairs to happen. The joys of living in the far north, and especially on the islands  :)

I saw that @Braidman, but I wasn't sure just how big an area was affected.
Are you in the firing line @CrankyYankee? Stay safe - as far as is possible.
Hope it doesn't affect your Christmas celebrations.  :/

  • Thank you both!  It's pouring rain and we lost power for about four hours, but the winds are still whipping at over 20mph with 50mph gusts.  Oddly enough it is about 50F right now.  We've lost most of our snowpack, and there's standing water everywhere.  The temperature is supposed to drop 30* in 6 hours and we're expecting a flash freeze.  There are still limbs, trees, and power lines down from the last storm...it's a mess.  We'll have temperatures in the single to teens below zero F with the wind chills, but we get that a few times every winter.  My father lives in the midwest and they are in much worse shape, with blowing snow creating massive drifts and temperatures in the twenties below zero F.    The cold is only supposed to last three or four days and next week it will be in the 40sF...it's a bizarre winter, for sure.

  • Our news programmes are showing extreme blizzard conditions over a wide area from the Canadian border all the way down to Florida. Hope you're OK @CrankyYankee.

    Keep safe @CrankyYankee
  • I took a photo when it first started raining...we had 8 inches of snow still on the ground.

    And this morning...bare ground everywhere.

Currently 8F, but we're supposed to have spring-like temperatures by the end of the week; I think we're having the winter you folks are supposed to get, and you're having ours!

I just hope we don't get another winter like last year @CrankyYankee, where I am. Horrible.
We get our coldest stuff after New Year, but last year there was barely any more snow than in your last pic , and we had nothing like the amount of frosts.
    Much better than wet!  :D
