Snowfall in our location was exceptional and has caught many out. When we see snow in the forecast we expect half a dozen snowflakes, and then the other type of snowflake panicking when in a car

I'm sure I've told the story before about visiting friends in Crawley many years ago. The chap was a friend of my then husband. The whole place had virtually shut down because there was half an inch of snow. We went to the cinema, and for something to eat. Cinema was empty apart from a few young lads causing bother. Hubby soon put them straight too
The best part was - there was no ice for the drinks....
The camping thing is a no go for me @Balgay.Hill as I walk on my own. I'd still like to do a little overnighter at one of the local hills, just to get some summit dawn photos etc. My ex partner wouldn't have entertained camping either, so I didn't get the chance back then. I know what you mean about the daylight effect in moonlight though

Fairy,KT53,you are right, but we weren't "caught out", people just don't pay attention or plan. The day we moved here 11 years ago this week,it was snowing. I drove over a 100 miles round trip to the hospital. Blankets, shovel, hot drink, basic phone. Used to have to dig the car out of the car park to come home, which I did on main roads, and carefully. It took me a minimum of 90 minutes to drive home on a "normal". Hubby used to drive to work in his little old Corsa, one guy lived a couple of roads away steep hill,he used to walk around,go to work with hubby. This was in the 2000s,folk got paid if they didn't turn up,young guy in the next road, with a fancy 4x4, didn't go, said he couldn't get there. We're talking 13 miles here, from one town to another, through a couple of villages, but not country lanes. The boss (small company) suggested he might get a lift with my hubby,at which point,he started going to work!
Wild edges, have just found out, the border collie has pain! She was sitting next to hubby a couple of days ago,he stroked her head, moved slightly, she yelped. This morning, she walked past him in the kitchen, very lightly brushed against his leg and yelped.
@Fairygirl That's a shame that you don't feel safe going camping on your own. It isn't something that crosses my mind as a stupid male. I know lots of women that backpack on their own, and i think that the type of folk you meet on the hill are 'good' people.
@Nanny Beach on the whole I agree that the problem is more often than not caused by lack of planning. I really think the problem with the sudden heavy snowfall is a different category, at least round here. The weather forecasts are hopelessly unreliable, and as often as not will contradict each other if you look at more than one app. There was nothing on either weather apps, or the weather forecast that I watched, to make me suspect we would have several inches of snow in the space of a few hours.
Oh - I agree @Balgay.Hill. The people you meet on hills are largely decent folk, and I've enjoyed many a conversation with all sorts of folk over the years. It isn't that, it's just the fact that I'd be on my own, and therefore it's a bit trickier if anything goes wrong I remember being on a hill somewhere, many years ago, and meeting a couple of women who were astonished to see me walking on my own. I found that very odd!

I'm holding my breath - this massive storm coming across the US has had predicted amounts of snow in my area ranging from light snow, to all rain, and now 8.5 inches of snow. The last storm petered out before it reached us, I'm hoping this one doesn't. We need it! We're a tourist-driven area with lots of ski mountains and snowmobile trails, and many locals switch from summer building/landscaping jobs to snow removal/plowing jobs with the seasons. Without the snow in winter, many people can't make a decent living.
