@Braidman my area is going to get hit tomorrow. Forecasts keep changing, but it looks like we'll get anywhere from 8-15 inches of snow. Long-range, it looks like we're going to get another 8-10 inches just before Christmas day, too. A great start to the cross-country ski season!

Indeed @CrankyYankee. The ski season in Scotland can be very hit and miss because our weather changes so quickly. The recent mild winters have made it very difficult. The Cairngorms, Lecht and surrounding ski areas will hopefully be getting a good boost with the recent weather, especially as it's been clear a lot of the time

@Fairygirl I'm an avid cross-country skier and love getting out my snow shoes as well. I would love to see the mountains of Scotland; they seem positively magical!

I used to ski a little bit, but haven't done it for donkey's years. I went to Whistler during my honeymoon [stayed with my relatives in Canada] and had a great time
Our mountains are indeed magical, although I'm slightly biased. Maybe not quite so fabulous when it's persisting down, and you can't see more than a few feet in front of you

I was saying on another thread somewhere @punkdoc, about sitting for ages in the car on the approach to Glenshee when going skiing years ago. They could only let a handful of cars through at a time because it was so difficult to keep the road open. Wind and snow is never a good combo

We thought we were stuffed on Sunday, @Fairygirl. We checked the gates were open when we got to Blairgowrie and drove on up, only to find 5 cars stopped. Turned out they were just anxious about the conditions, so we carried on. It was a little tricky, but better than most roads here, after it snows, and the hills were possitively glowing in the half light.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Our storm has just begun! The ground is already coated and snow's coming down at a good clip. Unfortunately, it's a wet snow which means it's going to get clogged in my snowblower. With 15-20 inches predicted between now and tomorrow afternoon, I'll be out at least three or four times to try to keep paths open to the barn. This was an hour ago, looking out my back door into the pasture. I put food out for the crows but it was buried within minutes, so I'm not sure they'll even know to look for it.
Our claim to fame is Mount Washington, "Home of the World's Worst Weather". There's an observatory on top of the mountain and I just checked their live webcams - you can't see anything thanks to all the snow stuck to the camera lens.

I thought that was an 'everything is better in America' type brag but nope, world record holder for windspeed from 1934 to 1996. 231mph. Only beaten by a tropical cyclone. Hurricane wind speeds for 110 days per year on average. Temperatures down to -46C
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
