Can you believe that I came across a house the other day where, when the loo is flushed it flushes with hot water from the gas boiler?!?!?! The bathroom is in an uninsulated downstairs extension on the back of the small terraced house, and apparently this was done by the landlord to stop the loo freezing during cold spells and causing damage and expensive repairs. Seems insane to me.
That's insane. Also kind of gross, who wants to smell a piping hot poo-stew?

I'm sorry @WonkyWomble, I wasn't getting at you at all, I'm fully aware of your circumstances.
It was a general query as to why so many people (not just on this forum) seem to be struggling so much. They don't seem to want to give up their fancy coffees and eating out and having holidays and want the government to help them out when things get tough.
I know what it's like to be poor - I actually burst into tears in a local shop many years ago because I couldn't afford both flour and sugar at the same time. I made my own clothes and my children's when they were young to save money. I've worked hard all my life and always managed to save a bit towards my old age - which is now.
I have to agree on that one. This is not about a lack of savings or poor planning at all. And my savings are not there to blow on a gas bill for an indefinite period until the government sort out something which has been decades in the making. I thought this was about 'sharing tips' rather than judging others
Thank you @Lizzie27, I'm afraid I'm not contributing to this any further. this is my last word on it all. Here's a little insight.
I haven't had a holiday since I was an adult. I'm now 46 and a half. I did have 4 days honeymoon in Norfolk which was lovely. I haven't had a meal in a restaurant in over twenty years... luckily I cook much better than any of them; thanks for teaching me Dove! I buy instant coffee.... I'm saying no more..... Look at the shareholders taking their stakes and not paying staff.... I'd give up on this country but I can't afford to renew my passport. I'm sure I'm still being extravagant in some way though.
@WonkyWomble, I know you are speaking the truth, and I know there are many others like you. We are in a very sad state in this country, and I despair as to what the future holds. Hugs from me.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
The increase in energy prices has been far too abrupt to have expected people generally to have foreseen and saved for it. It was foreseeable by people working in the business of energy efficiency and supply, but the government, who have been warned many times, did not choose to act in the interests of the population against the corporate vested interests, and there has been a great deal of misinformation and misdirection. Whether that was deliberate or not I can't say.
Your situation is sadly all too common @WonkyWomble. I'm afraid some people will die this winter as a result of political failure. I find that unforgiveable. But take care of yourself the best way you can. I am still hoping this cold snap will presage a generally mild winter

I agree it's quite wrong when a two wage household can't earn enough to live a modestly comfortable life. What's even worse is a lot of it is due to political choices made over the last 12 years. To return to economy tips, we make a lot of use of our microwave combi oven, we can use the oven function and microwave at the same time, this means you can cook a chicken in 1/2 the normal time. Having cooked it we can get 3, meals for two off a chicken that only took 45 mins of oven time to cook.
