Revolutions don't actually change much except for who the new rich people are.  Neither the American nor the French nor the Russian revolutions have led to redistribution of wealth but have given us new oligarchies who control wealth and power just as much, if not more, than before.   Same with all the others around the world really.

What does work in the more democratic states is people power when enough influential individuals come together to change wider thinking and make changes such as the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, education for all.  Now we need it to spread access to better education, better housing, heating, food and health care to all and not just those who can pay to get better services.

I personally believe that excessive wealth leaves people with an empathy malfunction. Literally so far removed from the existence of real poverty that they convince themselves it's the poor people's own fault.

In the morning particularly,I find a warm (boiled) cup of water for teeth-brushing prevents that Arctic blast of cold water sensation and I am considering a four-poster bed (or failing that, a pop-up tent to put on my bed in draughty conditions!)...has it really come to this?!

Four poster bed.... 🤔 You've given me ideas @clematisdorset
Although I'm pretty sure the two cats would come in with me still!

Well with two cats @WonkyWomble I should think that would mean bonus warmth :) ! I hope they would need no persuasion!

They provide warmth it's true @clematisdorset, trouble is they like to stretch and I get left with very little room... I'm not sure if it's the memory foam keeping them in place or their stubborn determination!!

I was thinking about the knock-on effects of the Winter and Winter Fuel difficulties in the home…

I noticed a speckling of mould in the unheated (and unused over Winter) en-suite bathroom. I’m not sure if heating it would have made a difference but I worked out that it would have cost over £100 to heat it over the last few months. I’ve cleaned it with mould & mildew spray and have some mould-resistant paint if I need it so I’m hoping that will remedy it.

The biggest sacrifice/difficulty I have found is drying washing. Tumble drier is just too costly and drying just by radiator power creates moisture. I have minimised washing by not washing throws and pet bedding just to freshen them, and am being frugal with towel washes etc (ie. not washing a towel that was just used to dry hair). I have a full laundry basket (mainly hand towels and sheets) but they can hang on for fine days to dry outside.

I also save the washing for when there's going to be a dry day. I generally put it on at night on the timer so it can be pegged out first thing in the morning - my back garden is east-facing so morning is best for drying washing.
