My son brought this from the Philippines. It is made from the semi-transparent shell of the "window pane" oyster. They originated in the town of Capiz and were first used in making slide windows.
I got round to putting up the dining room decorations today
Wow, @BenCotto, your telephone, does it still work?
Actually, yes. It has a wonderfully retro ring. The Bush radio from the same era works as well. The desk bells are for summoning the staff and the dinner service in the dresser is over 100 years old, a wedding present for my wife’s grandparents. We live our life in the 1950s!
I brought the tree inside on Tuesday [always leave them outdoors in a bucket of water until mid Dec] but after two days in the kitchen, it still had a block of ice on the trunk I finally got around to putting it up yesterday. ` These two seem to want to nest inside a lantern...
An origami red squirrel is what every display should have at this time of year
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I was looking for the equivalent in English, but failed. The Germans have this wonderful old fashioned word
Dienstfernsprecher
Before the telephone was a Telephon, it was called Fernsprecher (Fern = far distance, sprechen = to speak). If you did this at work, then it was while being in Dienst = in service.
My translation program translates Dienstfernsprecher with Railway Telephone Network.
Such a gorgeous tree @Fairygirl!! Love warm white lights, they make it look so cozy!
That she'll decoration is lovely @coccinella that you for the explanation of it's origins 😀 I was thinking it's like opaque stain glass windows 👍
I'm coming the first of the Christmas dinners today..... Step womble and her lovely hubby are here and I've been making sausage rolls, pavlovas, curry and mainly a mess.... Wish me luck folks as I'm doing all this with a sore throat and run down!

Love your tree @Fairygirl but the squirrel seems a bit shy.
I have some decorations made from that shell @coccinella. Bought them at the Xmas market in Bonn in 1994. Easy to remember as I was 8 months pregnant.
