What bulbs are you planting?

I love spring and am completely obsessed with buying bulbs! Along with potting up this year's purchases, I am currently in the throes of checking the previous two years' pots, slowly but surely being wheelbarrowed from the garage where I stored them post-flowering/dying down. I am (partly or completely) replenishing the compost, adding more grit etc. Whilst I have lost a few bulbs, I am extremely happy that a lot of the narcissi and tulips have thrived and multiplied. I have almost finished where the narcissi and tulips are concerned and there's nothing to guarantee I will have the same success with the other bulbs awaiting my attention. I lead quite a simple life here, eg OH cuts and colours my hair and wine is very cheap ;) so I spend what little money I have on my garden  :)

Looking forward to seeing all your beautiful bulbs in spring. Happy gardening!

We're lucky enough to have a Parker's Garden Centre not too far away where you can select your own bulbs, and they're cheaper than the mail-order price. Our purchases this year:

    Allium 'Fireworks' Yellow
    Allium 'Fireworks' White
    Allium sphaerocephalon
    Narcissus Tete a Tete
    Narcissus Martinette
    Narcissus Thalia
    Narcissus Minnow
    Narcissus Pueblo
    Narcissus Jonquilla mixed
Anemone Blanda (pink, purple, white mix)
    Crocus Sativus
    Iris  Reticulata 'Pixie'
    Tulip lily-flowered Ballerina
Tulip (various mixes) - some were given free at the till!

    Allium 'Fireworks' white

    Allium 'Fireworks' pink
    Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border

I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

@TigerFeet I am a little concerned about my Galanthus that have been in the garden for many years. The summer has been so dry they might have dried out and shrivelled. Just keeping my fingers crossed. I do try to water the area where they grow in the summer if very dry.  You should get more rain than me so that should help them.
When establised you should be able to lift and split after flowering, this is how to get them to multiply.
There is always so much to learn about gardening but that is what is exciting.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I was expecting one plants in my border to have died off leaving room to sink some bulbs, but whilst the flowers are starting to die off the plants are still very green with no gaps to plant any bulbs. I'll have to put some in pots, but will need to buy some more compost first.

Stunning Allium 'Fireworks' @LunarSea - def'ly one for serious consideration.

I remember there were some late summer flowering allium.... Must track them down.

Lots of Allium sphaerocephalon (Drumsticks) are going in. They do reach for sun in my garden but they look like raspberry ice pops and dry well. I will try them with Salvia Blue Note, which has v sharp drainage.
    (£7 for 100 bulbs)

Also I'm doing a few pots of crocus Cream Beauty. @Dovefromabove tipped me off to them, I think years ago. Mine didn't return a few years ago, but I want to try again.

The neighbourhood garden group is doing a group order, so we will split bags and split postage and should work out well for everyone.

I grow allium 'Purple Sensation' and find it returns year after year and will seed around rather too enthusiastically if I don't do some deadheading. The borders it grows in are not well drained, but quite heavy soil, wet over winter.
At the foot of the house wall, in a raised bed made dry by roots of climbing hydrangea it survives but is not nearly as happy there.

This is the first year our 'Fireworks' have flowered after planting them in 2019 and they waited until August even then!

The challenge is now to make sure everything gets out of the bags and into the earth. :D
