@HarryWhite We’ve inherited two mature Lichfield Angels when we moved to our house. The old man who used to live here and was clearly into gardening passed away 1 or 2 years before the house got sold by his family, so the garden was completely neglected for all that time. LAs form a part of the hedge and they were absolutely huge - 6 to 7ft tall and flopping in all directions. But despite the lack of care they have bloomed profusely - all covered in huge flowers.
I fed them and pruned them last spring and they were covered in flowers from ground level upwards (can’t find any photos though…). I remember looking at them at dusk last summer and thinking the hedge looked like a night sky - lots of bright stars (flowers) on a night sky (dark green foliage).
LA is not a rose I would’ve chosen myself but I’m happy I’ve got them.
These are the photos from when we just moved to the house (late August/early September).
7 Country Parsons in a bed, there’s a joke in there somewhere @HarryWhite, hope you have sturdy gloves!
I struggle to find a bucket deep enough to keep the graft of TCL roses submerged Peter, I resorted to a large black rubbish bin once. Two MACs and two Zephy’s will be a sight to behold in a few years.
Good to hear from you Owd 😊

.. a very prickly joke indeed Nollie... whoops... best of luck with those 7 @HarryWhite
I've had all the others you mention except W and C.. I'm liking BMS very much so far.
Lovely photos of Lichfield Angel.. I had it in a pot as a short climber, as it's low thorn, so easy to handle..
@PeterAberdeen Oh that's great, I'm delighted to have helped out your Mum over longstanding mystery.. hope it's the right one but she gets about does Dorothy P..
I think Aberdeen is a good location for roses I understand..
@WhereAreMySecateurs Sorry to have put you off that rose, it might have been my conditions but somebody in Australia had the same problem.. I'm surprised Kordes released it here but like Ross said, it's called 'Adorable', which obviously wasn't my experience..
Ayup @Nollie, Thanks. I pop in for a read now and again and post when I have something to add. I started my pruning last week but have had to suspend as we're under 4" snow here the last few days.
@Marlorena The Madame Anisette blooms were always spoiled like yours. Whether it sunny or rainy the tightly packed creamy white blooms did not open, browned and real ugly! I have got only couple of nice blooms. I had no clue, was blaming rain or got fried in the sun. Now I know the cause - botrytis. Thank you very much. The leaves were very healthy, I gave two years and really were hoping to get nice blooms but it was not the case. I've got rid of the plant at the end of Aug 2022.
@Rojas That's not a rose I know but sorry it didn't work out for you, but now you know the reason.. life's too short to hold on to roses that don't perform to our satisfaction.. or fickle nature, in my case..
@owd potter Lovely snow pic. I've had no snow here so far, I feel I'm missing out..
Aberdeen City used to win Britain in Bloom year after year in the 1970s because of its roses - even the inner barrier of the dual carriage ways were planted as rose beds.
Not now, unfortunately, due to council cut backs &c. There were two famous rose growers based in Aberdeen. One was Cocker's Roses, who are still going and the other was Anderson's Roses, who I think are now longer trading having closed in 1994.
Attached is a picture of the Rose fields of Anderson's in 1973.
I’m also rather disappointed we haven’t had any snow (yet) Owd, since we have a 6-month old puppy and it’s always amusing to see their reaction for the first time.
BTW we’ve been getting it wrong all these years and so have our roses, or should I say ‘rose’ since there is clearly only one. It’s pink, hates water and loves salt 😆 Might just about stretch to a description of a species rugosa, but it’s a constant amazement the rubbish you come across on t’internet..

You are right, re Aberdeen.
