@PeterAberdeen Peter, they grow, or used to, the white version or rosebay willowherb in their rose gardens. I considered trying it here but the pink one causes me troubles enough..
@cooldoc .. No they don't seem to have much scent.. I've grown a few here in the past, including some rare ones, like 'L19 Laos' which turned into a red climbing China rose, it had a light but sweet scent.. https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.62513&tab=1
Historically, R. chinensis var. spontanea is the China influence, from colder areas of China.. The less hardy R. odorata var. gigantea is the Tea influence, more from the warmer southern parts of China..
Surprisingly, 'Mutabilis' is likely a China/Tea cross, from DNA testing analysis..
Thanks all! I do keep it meticulous desite the gravel issues. The dogs are very good with it, theyve no interest in digging at all and with short legs theyd be hopeless. Theyve never pulled up the weed matting and are never unsupervised outside. I was fuming he blamed them! For bassets the garden is for basking and nibbling flowers in summer, toilet and a mooch in winter!
This is when wedding day takes over from albertine. Behind my hulthemias are sweet syrie and brother cadfael in full bloom. Glorious. Im constantly out when its like that! Debating doing a limited open garden in summer so others can enjoy the roses
Magnificent Jessica, you have a fantasy rose garden made real there.
@Marlorena I didn’t know they had confirmed that about Mutabilis, makes sense now why two died on me. Some of the tea/noisettes are too tender for my winters too, I debated trying Rêve d’Or, but given it’s sport Duchesse d’Auerstädt also died on me I didn’t want to risk it. To be on the safe side, I shall be fleecing Lady Hillingdon for the coming cold snap!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Thank you everyone! Im Notts way, maybe I will do a little garden opening at its peak!
@WhereAreMySecateurs how are you with shoe stealing and counter theft? (Ive got 4 but our eldest holds court from the sofa not the window!) @cooldoc those are Angel eyes and eyes for you, 6years oldish plants. Prolific! Ive got for your eyes only and a few others too elsewhere in the garden, love my hulthemias! @Oliya I do indeed, entirely by accident originally, didnt realise it was a climber! Its wonderful, scented and exquisite, it never gets blackspot (!) very very sturdy too. I let it get to about 6ft or so and just put green steel canes in in winter to prevent rock but its very self supporting really. Its about 6/7 years old, and thats brother cadfael just infront of it slightly darker. Theres a little Lavender ice in there too at the side.

I guess the colours that darken with sunlight comes from China roses as well..

But... your dogs don't dig? Interested in a pup exchange...?😁
Do you grow Sweet Syrie as a shrub? How tall does it get?
