    Yes that's ok, just cut that root back to the same length as the rest of it.. nothing to worry about, it rejuvenates it.. like having a haircut..

    @JessicaS
    What a pity about the gravel situation... I've laid it in the past when younger, and always understood to have a 2 inches minimum. 1 inch I would think to be not very effective as you have found..  as for blaming it on the dogs, well that's convenient..
    ..  I didn't know about the pegs though.  I have gravel here with membrane, laid by previous owner, the gravel is 20mm and at least 2-3 inches thick I would say.

    Well, it always looks nice in your photos, so at least we wouldn't know the issues..

    I've just noticed Peter Beales have 25% off bare roots code JAN23, but it finishes midnight tomorrow 16th..

    Exuberant roses.. your 'Perle d'Or' is especially pretty, we don't see that one often enough..

    @Nollie
    So sorry to hear this, I didn't think you could get it so soon, does one not get any immunity? at least for a few months.. presumably you have some testing apparatus, otherwise how do you tell it's not flu or a cold?..

    Your china rose is looking good.. I don't think we need worry about dormancy with that type, I never did.. even here they can bloom during winter quite well..

    Yes we do test Marlorena. I hadn’t been offered a booster in over a year which is probably why I got it bad for the first time back in November and it hung around so long. It’s really not too bad this time tho, thanks.

    The Chinas do seem to be year-round don’t they? We’ll see how it copes with the -8 forecast for next week, if it materialises!

    @JessicaS, pity about the gravel situation. I find the metal pegs extremely useful for pinning membrane down, it helps to fold over the raw edge, then pin it. You really only need to top up with more gravel, it's the weight and thickness of that layer which is the secret, especially if you have excitable dogs scrambling around!

    Interesting discussion regarding Chinas @Nollie and @Marlorena . Tea roses are also from the east (if I am not mistaken), but there seems to be a non hardy parent to Teas which make them vulnerable to extreme cold (source Google).

    And Chinas are not scented? All well scented ones mentioned on TW site seems to be have a hybrid parent.

    Temps expected to drop for next two days in most places Nollie. -5 to -6 here. Hope it does not last like the one we had back in December. Swiss alps will finally get some much needed snow I guess.

    Here I have the delights of rosebay willowherb and field horsetail.  They will get the better of me in the end but until then, I fight on..
    I remember my grandmother back in the 70's seeing willow herb and thinking it was lovely.  The next year she really regretted planting in her garden!
