@Oliya Yes that's ok, just cut that root back to the same length as the rest of it.. nothing to worry about, it rejuvenates it.. like having a haircut..
@JessicaS What a pity about the gravel situation... I've laid it in the past when younger, and always understood to have a 2 inches minimum. 1 inch I would think to be not very effective as you have found.. as for blaming it on the dogs, well that's convenient.. .. I didn't know about the pegs though. I have gravel here with membrane, laid by previous owner, the gravel is 20mm and at least 2-3 inches thick I would say.
Well, it always looks nice in your photos, so at least we wouldn't know the issues..
Great summer memories @JessicaS, your Eye Island looks magnificent. I'm sorry to hear about the issues with the gravel laying but agree it does look perfect in your photos.
I too was looking through summer photos, seeing how long I've got til spring bulb and hellebore season, maybe 6-8 weeks It is turning cold again from tonight so I have put out extra food for the wild birds.
One I didn't appreciate enough, Perle d'Or with its sweet raggedly blooms; it just gets on with things with no fussing.
Buff Beauty, I'm looking forward to this one getting tall enough to tumble elegantly over my front railings...
I added two roses to the mid border part of the dogs-leg, about where the cane and linaria is. English Garden (new) and Global Beauty (potted last year) for extra cream and yellow padding.
Wow lots of posts to catch up on. My SIL has been over for a visit and kindly left me a gift of another bout of covid. Not fully over the last one yet! This one seems very mild in comparison, thankfully.
I’ve been slowly working my way along my big south-facing bed, weeding, watering, rose pruning and mulching. Cramoisi Superieur is showing little sign of going dormant. Maybe I’ll just remove the few lower blackspotted leaves and leave the rest on as an experiment..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Victoria Sponge Exuberant roses.. your 'Perle d'Or' is especially pretty, we don't see that one often enough..
@Nollie So sorry to hear this, I didn't think you could get it so soon, does one not get any immunity? at least for a few months.. presumably you have some testing apparatus, otherwise how do you tell it's not flu or a cold?..
Your china rose is looking good.. I don't think we need worry about dormancy with that type, I never did.. even here they can bloom during winter quite well..
Yes we do test Marlorena. I hadn’t been offered a booster in over a year which is probably why I got it bad for the first time back in November and it hung around so long. It’s really not too bad this time tho, thanks.
The Chinas do seem to be year-round don’t they? We’ll see how it copes with the -8 forecast for next week, if it materialises!

@JessicaS, pity about the gravel situation. I find the metal pegs extremely useful for pinning membrane down, it helps to fold over the raw edge, then pin it. You really only need to top up with more gravel, it's the weight and thickness of that layer which is the secret, especially if you have excitable dogs scrambling around!
Interesting discussion regarding Chinas @Nollie and @Marlorena . Tea roses are also from the east (if I am not mistaken), but there seems to be a non hardy parent to Teas which make them vulnerable to extreme cold (source Google).
And Chinas are not scented? All well scented ones mentioned on TW site seems to be have a hybrid parent.
Temps expected to drop for next two days in most places Nollie. -5 to -6 here. Hope it does not last like the one we had back in December. Swiss alps will finally get some much needed snow I guess.
