@Alfie_ like Marlorena, I trial many roses in smaller pots first, they have to earn their place in one of my limited permanent pots or in the ground. For me it’s not only to see if I like them but also to judge how they do in my challenging climate. However, I have planted some larger, vigorous roses directly into large pots and they are non the worse for it.
My usual is a 20L cheap plastic pot that slots neatly into bigger, decorative pots (with a brick at the bottom of the large pot to raise the plastic one up to the rim). That way, they still look good while on probation - usually 2-3 seasons unless it’s a real dog from the start. Also provides better insulation from heat and easy to hoik out. I have had a Blush Noisette (not a small rose) in a 10L pot for 2yrs but that’s in desperate need of planting out now!
As a general aside, I find the longer you grow roses the more relaxed you get about them and realise they are pretty tough plants. There is plenty of excellent advice about on planting, growing, pot culture, feeding, pruning etc. that help you get the best out of them but few hard and fast rules that you are duty-bound to follow. Guidance is really helpful when you are starting out, but eventually, one ploughs one’s own furrow, developing methods of dealing with your roses that suits you and your growing conditions. I have lost count of the amount of times DA, for example, have changed their care and pruning advice - they seem to contradict themselves year on year.

Sorry, just catching up a little, thank you to @Tack and @Lizzie27 for the breathtaking Eglantyne pictures. That's another definite. The discount GARDEN for 15% will apparently work till November 30th. Has anyone here tried The Ingenious Mr Fairchild (God these twee rose names)? The fuchsia paeony-type blooms really are attractive but the growth looks a bit spindly and ugly in some online pics.
Eustacia Vye has def been a bit disappointing for me as its flushes are so brief and far between. Get more flower power from Gertrude (which I was braced for) so far.
It's so good to see so many of your roses still giving lovely blooms. Here are the best two from my garden at the moment -- 'Bonica' and 'Ghislaine de Feligonde'. They just keep going!
Tried an order from Henry St. Looks good and the soil arrived quite moist underneath the chippings, none of which had been disturbed from the pot in transit. Quite excited about this one having seen pics online (Princess Charlene de Monaco).
Eta: what a beautiful colour, esp, is the Ghislaine de F, Woodgreen.
@Marlorena Many thanks. I’ll give it a go as the bed is 16’ feet long x 6’ deep and 3’ high reducing to 2’ at the front (lawn side) as it slopes down. I will need to remember to place the tallest roses centre and bottom as will be viewing mainly from the house and patio.
@Nollie. The bed has old wood in the base, topped by 2 ton of sub soil. 3 ton of top soil and 25 barrows of 30 year old horse manure. My neighbour has horses and there’s plentiful supply so I’m hoping it will last for a while.
The Garland I’m hoping to cover the shed. I was thinking of vine eyes and galvanised metal support.
Said shed by the side is the area I’m going to plant the rose hoping it will scale up the side and across the roof eventually. It should get full sun from about late morning. Garden is north facing.
@WhereAreMySecateurs I have The Ingenious Mr Fairchild rose and it’s only first year. Not much to report but I do like the big peony like blooms and pleasant scent.
Thanks for the advice people, much appreciated. Can I leave potted roses out in the open over winter if they are on feet? Struggling to find more room against the house as already have a lot there. Can they hope over winter in pots with heavy rain and frosts? It shall I find room in the shed/garage? Thanks
