@WhereAreMySecateurs .. I used to have Charles Rennie Mackintosh.. I only have 1 picture which was taken mid October, blowing a gale, and pouring with heavy rain.. I seem to enjoy photo taking in such perverse conditions for some reason.. So it's not exactly a glam shot, but shows the amount of blooms at that late time of year.. continuous blooming, the scent improving with age [not much first year].. the plants - I had 3 in a group, grew to between 5-6 feet and were often a lilac colour, very full.. tallish plants, narrowish growth habit..
@rossdriscoll13 and @Marlorena, many thanks for the feedback on TaB, it was the almost continuous blooming that attracted me, yes it does nod quite a bit doesn’t it? I’ve just belatedly read your comments on HMF Marlorena and browsed all the photos.
Unfortunately a pot is not an option in my climate Ross, it needs to be shaded at the base and still get some sun up top and those spots are limited. I like the idea of growing it rambler-style since I have a new raised bed/6ft x 12ft trellis arrangement in the offing. It would be west facing, but my sun is pretty strong as most of you know.
I was tempted by Marie Nabonnand for that spot since Loubert have it this year (as well as Crépuscule) but TaB is a freebie so would make me restrain my spending. Maybe!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie As you know, 'Marie Nabonnand' is a must have - get it whilst it's available - rose, as far as I'm concerned... damask scented and thornless.. and so French.. I mean come on .. you know you want it..
As it's bare root season, I wonder if I can tempt some more roses onto members..
'Frilly Cuff'.. not as scented as Gabriel Oak, but much easier to grow.. 'Absolutely Fabulous'.. here 5 foot tall by 6 wide, taken from above.. scented of anise, continuous, great foliage, and just a non-pareil amongst yellow roses..
'Wild Rover'.. a tall floribunda/climber, scented of cloves with continuous bloom.. large glossy foliage.. the orange is 'Westerland'..
'Lolabelle'... I think it would take an extensive breeding programme to produce a rose as good as this.. 'Tall Story'.. a useful floribunda/short climber in this colour range.. scented and continuous.. 'Lucky'.. another floribunda/climber with good foliage that lasts into winter..
Thank you for the low-down on CRM, @Marlorena. Impressive showing for October, even allowing for your slightly warmer conditions and infinitely greener than average fingers. Think I have to get it!
I didn't know there were camellias that dropped their flowers cleanly, @newbie77! I learn more from this Rose thread than from all my (many many many) gardening books.🤓
@purplerallim - thanks. What a strange situation with the scent. Form what I’ve read some scented roses like certain conditions to display scent properly. For example, I lost the scent completely from Well Being but after lots of searching for answers it prefers slightly alkaline soil so after adding a bit of garden lime it came back. I don’t know if you have ever seen any reviews by Darren Harwood but he has 170 odd rose varieties and rates Twice as one of his top:
@Marlorena - some great pictures. No need to sell me on Ab Fab as @Nollie has already sold it to me - it’s top of my list for my next bare root order.
That Ancient Mariner looks incredible. That rose you recommend instead of GO - what difficulties does GO have? I’ve just recently received two GO bare roots. You got any tips for this rose? Thanks.
@nollie, regarding Thomas A Becket, I had it in my previous garden and now in this garden. Flowers a lot, grows happily and yes it nods so I have given it support at base. I have been happy with this rose. I have lost hope on The Prince and make do with my WS2000 from DeWilde. Actually I could have ordered from Trevor White at one point of time but between TP and Evelyn I chose Evelyn and then it went out of stock.
@Alfie_ Alfie.. Gabriel Oak has a wonderful scent, and delicious blooms with rich colour, and it stands out from afar.. I've had to downsize here, so lots of my roses were removed recently by garden people, Gabriel Oak's went with those.. I had 2 and I can no longer tolerate the length of time it takes to establish some of these Austins in my garden. I recommend you grow them in pots for a couple of years, for quickest results, and plant out further down the line when the roots are bigger. It has a spindly growth habit that got on my nerves.. I would probably have kept them though..
Incidentally, you do know that you can grow more than 1 rose in a pot for a few years, for a more floriferous result. DA do this but they don't shout about it.. This Princess Alexandra of Kent photo taken from their website, is actually 3 roses planted close together, and they've had them in that pot for 8 years, just replenishing the top soil each season...
You can get up to all sorts of tricks with roses..
Aagh, I knew you would say that about Marie Nabonnand @Marlorena, you minx! I got Noella Nabonnand as a substitute but it just didn’t wow me like your photos of MN always do.
I’ve never tried three in a pot (pots being tricky here, see previous) but I can recommend planting roses in a triangle of three in the ground for a fuller display. I have trios of Lady Emma Hamilton, Munstead Wood and Julia Child. Not that JC needs to be in a trio, but it results in much smaller bushes and with the condensed growth the flower power is simply incredible.
