When I had Blue For You I thought it smelt of apples and cinnamon, rather nice, I just didn't like the way the flowers faded to a strange grey colour, the sort that people paint their fences with these days..
Perhaps Wild Blue Yonder had a better scent than I recall.. so do consider if interested.. ..first season bare root.. such vigour..
I would call Blue for You a strong Turkish delight fragrance which fills that end of the garden, and even though it gets very wet here sometimes, it never balls.🤔 Do you think there maybe different strains of a particular variety of rose?
My "Scent from heaven" is planted on an obelisk and the strong wind over the last few days has caused the obelisk to lean over the due to the weight of the top growth. This has caused the roots of the rose to lift and has needed drastic action. I have untied the rose and managed to move the obelisk and taken out two thicker shoots at ground level. I've given it a severe prune and hope that it will survive. Please reassure me that I've done the right thing, it's such a good "doer" I would hate to lose it.
I rather like like a fade to grey rose re Blue for You!
@Suesyn I’m sure you have given it a much better chance of life than leaving it with the roots exposed. I would have done the same thing in an emergency rescue situation if it’s any comfort. Finger’s crossed your rose makes a full recovery and hope your strong winds have abated.
Cramoisi Superieur - just picked off fresh sawfly larvae, they are back!

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I think it will survive @Suesyn as my standard rose did a similar thing two years running! It was bent over at right angles the first time, doubled up the support. The next time during a very bad windy winter it went over again, so now has a fence post to hold it up! They are hardier than they look!
Great timing to see your lovely WS Nollie, Trevor White has just dispatched mine, along with Mutabilis.
I wouldn't worry @Suesyn, the retailers are digging up non dormant roses and severely pruning roots and stems right now before sending out. TW writes that the package can be left unopened for 7-10 days in a frost free place. Roses are tough.
@Nollie, I intend to show pictures of your lush and verdant Ebb Tide to my rubbish one. Good luck, @Suesyn... bet you saved it! a couple of years ago my camellia was uprooted when a fence blew over and I didn't even notice it to replant it for about three weeks. It's fine, still kicking. @purplerallim your pic on the last thread of Blue for You was stunning. Can't wait to receive mine. it's amazing how different roses can look in different gardens. David Austin's much-used promo pic for LoS is almost unrecognisable to me.... different shape and colour. @Marlorena, please don't tempt me into a European rose order. Versigny and Purple Lodge and Agnes Schillinger are on that Lottum site and I am trying my very best to forget it.😁
I think I was lucky in that I picked a spot it likes @WhereAreMySecateurs It gets baked for about four hours, but doesn't have much competition, but does have its roots shaded by other plants. In the raised bed it is kept fairly dry, and does get BFB and a seaweed feed in spring, with the odd watering of tomato feed during summer. I also put used tea leaves at the roots once in summer. Other than that it's just cutting back the growth, the four foot long growth, that can pop up during the year, and dead heading, that way it can have three flushes a year.😁 And just to keep you going .....
Well at least Tuincentrumlottum (TCL) have very reasonable postage fees for the amount you can order @WhereAreMySecateurs, there is that..
I think it was you asking whether Hybrid Perpetuals counted as ‘old roses’? Yes is the answer, old roses are classes of roses that existed prior to 1867 but if an HP was bred later than that date they still have the same characteristics and count. Here’s a useful description of what is an ‘Old Rose’. We don’t tend to make the distinction between Old and Antique that Zimmerman makes but it’s interesting nevertheless re the China/non-China input:
Just In. Does anyone else have an unsolicited David Austin calendar or is it just for disgruntled Bring Me Sunshine purchasers? Lovely pictures, interestingly a lot are not their own.
